Should i drop out of college?
    #19020116 - 10/23/13 03:58 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

A question I thought I would ever be asking. All through high school i did JUST enough to get by. Never failed a grade or got held back but was always passing with cs and ds and bs and taking a summer online class nearly every summer. I thought I would change in college. Well i really didn't and I cant learn how to make the change. I sit in class and try to listen but my mind starts wondering after 3 minutes and it seems damn near impossible to listen and focus. Like I WANT REALLY badly to be able to put my all into my schooling and im aware how important it is, but just cant make myself focus on it.

Im in my second year now. I only passed like 5 out of 8 of classes last year and failed a 6 week course i took over the summer. I was placed on acedemic probation. I said I was gona give it one more semester to see if I can try to do better. Well I have been doing... ok. Until today. I spent all weekend writing a 6-7 page paper on a controversial topic. Well I didn't cite my sources the correct way and got in trouble for plagiarizing. I am being forced to drop the class or have the teacher bring it to the school board. Not to mention i had a 89% in the class so I was doing good until that incident. Huge setback. If I stay in school I will now how to take that class for the THIRD time.

Im just at a loss for words and feel like shit that I cant even pass classes at a community college. Very few people have the opportunity to go to college and I feel like im taking that for granted and just "throwing it away". I honestly don't see myself improving in my schooling but I don't see my life going in any good direction if i drop out either. I mean, I would have no education and I would have to keep working the shitty job I have now that I dread so much. Only more hours. I would have literally nothing if it weren't for my parents, they helped me buy my car, helped me get a job, and paid for my schooling. and now I may have to tell them im dropping out of school?

Feeling really depressed about all this and dont know what I should do.

Stop doing drugs, go see a psychiatrist, get something for your depression/ADHD and start caring about school again... that's what I would do.

Alternatively, you could drop out, disappoint everyone (including yourself) and always wonder what might have been.

Me?  I hate having regrets... especially big ones like that.  I say get back up on that horse, take whatever meds you need to take to keep your focus, and knock it out of the park.

You can always go back. I wasn't a great student when I was younger.

But now that I'm older I have more focus and everything has clicked and I do great.

A couple years working a dead-end job will do wonders for your motivation.

My brother attends classes in Harvard. Not everyone can join such a prestige school on account of never banishing all students whom don't have academic credentials which verify their achievements. I know a professor in the family that checks over these files and he can verify you. He will actually insist that he check your files to discover whether you are able to enroll or not. Some people will try to suggest that he will sometimes purposely prolong someones enrollment procedures in order to forestall them to achieving their own personal goals, as if the teacher is actually trying to prevent you from ever enrolling here.

I believe that my uncle used to teach Latin there for a few years, he taught my brother how to use fluent Latin while still adopting his usual method of speaking. He would teach them how to produce sounds off the tips of their tongues, and he would place the student somewhere where they can copy the exact words he was informing them of, so in later cases they will adopt a similar manner of speaking. As if each time he taught a lesson they were adapting into a language which they previously hadn't acknowledged as being the normal way of communicating, but which, nonetheless, gave you the impression that the person was also using his usual way of communicating as you produced the sounds.

I know as he started to extend the duration of his classes, to stay a little longer to learn more with someone far more capable than he, would start to be able t oexpress himself far better than he could without the teacher there by his side to assist him. Sometimes he will teach two people at the same time, so instead of his usual one person sessions he would allow more people to "attend" his presentations. He also introduced French to a class many years before, he used to teach French primarily, but in the last few months he suddenly had a somewhat rash decision to abandon his Latin lessons and transfer into a French class.

Well you should really ask the teachers if they will review your case, I'm sure if you discuss it over with them, and really try to empathize your initial point, you will find they might give your case a special exception and allow you to return.

True.  It's possible you just need to mature a bit more, OP.  I didn't go to college till I was 32.  Spent my 20's chasing girls and partying every night.  You have plenty of time left, just get your shit in order and decide what you really want out of life.

Still man, you are already THERE... getting enrolled is half the battle.  I  say try to salvage your current situation if there is any way to do so.

What is your major?  Why do people never start right off with this?

Learn a trade.  Stop wasting your time and money

I did stop doing drugs. I abused shrooms (like 2-3 times a week over the summer and messed around with dxm a lot my senior year (like once a month), and of course smoked weed a good 4-5 times a week. But honestly this year i really have been abstaining from drugs. Ill smoke on the weekends and occasionally get a lil drunk. But thats really it. and I dont have depression. I just actually have something to be depressed about lol. ADHD i might have. But I dont really believe those drugs like adderall work in the long term. Oh and obviously i carea bout school if i made this post and am sad about possibly dropping out

You might be surprised.  It really depends on the person, the drug and the dose.  Maybe you don't need anything at all... that's for a professional to decide, not some random schmuck on the internet like me.  Anyway, do what you think is best.  I think I have made it clear that I think you should try to salvage your schooling rather than drop out and maybe go back later..  because lots of times, 'maybe' never ends up happening.

Drop out.  College doesn't sound right for you OP.

You're just going to dig yourself into debt, and frankly, it doesn't sound like you'll be able to graduate at all.

I agree with this actually.. maybe I should restate my position, OP:  I don't think you should halt your education... but perhaps 'college' is not the right path for you. Maybe you should seriously consider a trade school as previously mentioned.  Hell, I have been considering taking some courses in welding recently, and my wife wants me to got to Farrier school because shoeing our horses gets expensive.  There are lots of things out there other than college;  I just don't think you should drop out and start living in your parent's basement... that's always a bad idea.
