Shroomery Coders, Please help me design and build a simple instant messaging program

I got a idea for a slick Instant Messenger program. Sort of like Skype and MSN, but, with a twist! Which will be the main selling point of the program.
I am versed in basic C++ and C# as well as basic MS SQL server/ mySQL.
It is important to decide first whether i want this program supported by a web browser (sort of like Face Book chat) or a stand alone program, like Skype.
Please help me through with this project and when the app hits the market i will share revenues with you.
So far i am considering writing this program in C#. Should i go through some open sourced Instant messaging programs, like Pidgin? Should i buy a book on Windows Communication Foundation?
What is my next step?
Any help greatly appreciated!

Just start building it. Fuck the books; if you're going to do it the 'official' way (whichever official way you would choose - rapid, agile, waterfall, etc.), you could lose yourself in books and reading and whatnot. Just start building, run into problems, solve them, start all over when the project gets unmanageable and in the end persevere. If you dedicate some time to it and if you have some skill, then it needn't take too long. Depending if you have any sort of coding experience, that is. Btw, if you don't, then I wouldn't start with C#; or hire someone to do the actual coding.

You'll have to do something pretty revolutionary if you want a popular IM program. It seems like the IM market is pretty locked down by Skype, and MSN.
It'll be hard presses to compete with them, so I wouldn't bother trying unless you have a really really unique twist that'll make your program stand out from the rest.
If you're going to make it as a sort of web application, you'll need to make sure it can function correctly with the mainstream browsers, and possibly alternate browsers. However if you're making a web app, you'll have more areas in which you'll have to program.
Perhaps try and cater to the mobile department (Androids, etc..)?
