Maybe I'm not using enough spawn when I make my tubs, I've usually used 5 quart jars but gonna move up to 6, maybe 7.
I try keeping the bottom polyfil holes tight, keeping the top ones loose. I always seem to get one or two tubs that just dont want to do anything.

Have you considered using your syringes to isolate a certain growth through agar? Therefore isolating the best growing section of mycellium. Im a newb, so dont listen to me.. but this is what I've been researching.
Agar Isolation

I mean, let me get this out there first, I am no TC, im just a guy with access to the internet.
If you have spores from a fruit print - and you are happy with the majority of the genetics characterized when fruiting - shape,color.. ya know.. than I wouldent worry about getting a new culture altogether via spore syringe.
I would isolate sectors using agar and after a few isolations, you'll have found yourself with a more selected set of genetics, and isolating the fastest growing rhizo's can more accuratley reflect speedier colonization times, as for fruiting Im not sure how to isolate that - beyond simply isolating a " strains ", or prints fastest rhizo growth through sector isolation, you can repeate the process over and over again and find yourself with what is called a monoculture, and to take that monoculuture, innoculating rye/wbs/whatev.grain with a agar chunk, you'll be sure to see those genetics you've unknowling selected appear more periodically and less mutations in your tubs. When you find yourself with a isolation you find yourself happy with, you can take that and create a master slant, and go back to it whenever you need another master inoculation source ( g2g ) ..
Hope this helps, probably redudant and hardily legiable.
I tried though :/
