I've noticed that some Pholiota appear to be radially fibrillose but they are not (I don't know if this feature has a name to it), their caps feel smooth to the touch.
Most of the Gymnopilus I've ever found do not feel that way, they look rough and feel the same.

I mean to say feel smooth to the touch but look fibrillose and rough.
You kinda took what I said out of context.

Pholiota can have decorated pilei but still have a layer of glutinous hyphae above or below the squamules or fibrils. If you find a mushroom that isn't tacky enough to be called viscid you can call it lubricous. Also, I reserve the term radially fibrillose for textures like you would find on Inocybe species or lacrymaria etc.

Not all Pholiota have glutinous elements. Some are dry to the touch. However, no Gymnopilus are viscid. So if you find what you think is Gymnopilus and it's viscid or lubricous then it's time to consider Pholiota, Hebeloma or Cortinarius.
