This is your one stop shop for all your discussion and ID request needs.
Anything you want to talk about (within the rules) as long as it pertains to mushrooms in the PNW, actives or edibles is welcome here.

awesome. great idea to include ID requests in the title. This should really help the PNW active finds thread a lot. (I know I am guilty of chit chat in there myself )

I really want to find some Matsutake this year. They look cool and I've heard they taste really good. Any tips?

I think they are hard to find, because you have to sift through ground debris to get to them. They grow under a lot of different trees but mainly under fir, in PNW.

Should I be able to find them at any elevation? Or mainly just up in the mountains? I think I remember reading that they are fond of ponderosa pine.

Yeah I think at higher elevation, if you know of some pine or other conifer forests, that is a good start. I think the season for them is afoot.

Me too! He is probably the best fiction author since Kurt Vonnegut. My favorites of his are probably Survivor and Haunted.

I was thinking that outside of sister would be a good place to look because there are tons of Ponderosa pine, and it's at a lot higher elevation than down here in the valley. I think it might be freezing up there at night though, I don't know how long the fruiting season lasts for.

It seems the active finds thread has decided to revolt against this one. LOL. Is it me or has it become even worse in there?

I think more likely there hasn't been sufficient time. Give this thread a full season or two to see if people get the point by then and we'll see.
I even think they should link to one another in their first OPs.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Hey guys...not Psilocybin I know but just found this close to my home, near Vancouver. Definitely a Fly Algaric right? Probably not going to eat any as the effects sound a bit much for me, although I might try a tiny bit in some food. Was growing near some hedges by a bank..woodchips possibly but was very dark. Am I right in thinking there's not many lookalikes to the Fly?

See? All it requires is some gentle prodding.
And yes, that A musc var flaviolata I believe - wait for a trusted identifier tho.

It's cool man and welcome to the shroomey. We're just attempting to cut down on the clutter in that other thread, it's a very busy place this year.

Cool, yeah thanks for the help. I can imagine it's crazy for sure!
Funny that last night I had a mushroom picking dream and today I found these. Never been picking before. Anyway I read this thread:
http://www.shroomery.org/8667/Amanita-muscaria-A-New-Outlook
I was thinking of trying it just for the gentle lift and not the full rollercoaster. I'll let you know if anything interesting occurs

Hey MJK, all the matsutake I have found, 10 or so, were visible above ground mostly and were under hemlocks in the cascades.
