Slow colonization
    #19014200 - 10/22/13 03:24 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Okay, So it has been around 21 days or more since I inoculated my 6 BRF verm jars and have nothing to show but one jar has a tiny tiny amount of mycelium. I also have 4 corn jars with a tiny tiny bit of mycelium on one piece of corn. I also have a LC jar that is doing ok, a good bit of mycelium, its the most recent, too. What is going on? I think the temp is around 63-70. I will have pictures up in a few minutes. What should I do?

They are in my closet in a small box then in a garbage bag.

Corn jars? That stuff is sticky as all hell. I have always heard to stay away from corn, and I have tried WBS with corn in it... no bueno.
BRF jars... Sounds stalled out to me.
I once innoc'ed a bunch of BRF jars without sHaking the syringe. Most did nothing at all and the few that did show just got thrown out after very slow colonization.
Did you remember to shake really well?

And yes, I shook the syringe very well.

Did it just start growing or has it been stalled like that for some time?

21 days is a long time. I would honestly be tossing those jars out if I they didn't have any growth after that long, even at temps as low as 63F which can slow things down quite a bit. That doesn't mean with 100% certainty that nothing is going to grow in those but it's pretty unlikely.

As for the ones that do have some growth you could give them some time but if the growth seems to stall completely they're probably contaminated.

There's no reason to have them in a garbage bag. Light will not harm them and in order to allow for gas exchange the holes in the lid should not be obstructed by anything like that.

Can I re-inoculate?

Re innoc wouldn't make much sense if they are contamed. I personally would toss the contents and start fresh. Verm and BRF are cheap and 6 jars isn't much.

Don't re-inoculate. Try giving them a bit of air by removing the foil on the lid. I hope the holes are not covered up. Keep them in the closet or whatever, but light doesn't matter at this point.

If nothing shows up then just keep the one that has started and make more new jars - don't use the same cakes.

I have mine on a 12/12 light/dark cycle in a compartment with a nintendo wii and AC adapter on standby

they should be around 75-80 and not directly on the element

i've had fungus that took that long but they all were contaminated from leaving the foil on and too much humidity and heat i think

I hate those Wide mouth full pint jars, I would try getting some 1/2 pint wide mouth jars also for cakes.

If you look really closely you can see some growth. Is this normal for only two days of growing, or is that very little?

That's good for two days.

So I just birthed the cake, have three small shrooms about half a inch long already. Has anyone heard of cakes taking this long?

they say if it takes that long and survives you can still do stuff to it and the output should be average

There is no need to incubate, and there is no need to put anything garbage bags except for spent substrates....
