Doh! Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca. I did give the gills a second look.
Thanks, Canid!

Can someone tell me the best way to tell a Liberty cap from all the ones that are just lookalikes? I see ones similar to pictures of libs ive seen on this forum.

A collection of all the ways to tell Libs from everything else. It's nothing against you or anyone, but I grind my teeth when I witness people asking for one characteristic to help them find what they are looking for. The answer to that is Location and LBM, but it really doesn't help much, when there is a plethora of information out there.

I would like to imagine what I was smelling on my hike was an edible mushroom, because my goodness it smelled good. The truth is, I have no idea what it was. I sure wish I could find out. It's just as likely not a mushroom at all. Sweet spicey and noms noms, almost like a deep fried chocolate covered potpourri or something. I have never smelled anything like it in my whole life. Or maybe it was burning flesh from my thick inner thighs rubbing into one another.

Taking conversation from the PNW Actives thread...
Also near where I live, there are some trails in the woods. I'll be walking the main trail and then see a side-trail. I'll follow it just 20 feet off the main trail, over a hump/dip and then WHAM... I'm in some homeless dude's fucking camp. Seattle has some of the best programs for housing/assisting homeless. Many that choose to sleep on the streets or in the woods don't want to adhere to the "zero tolerance" drug policy for those places that offer beds. 3 years ago, the woods/trails were well-maintained. Now they are filthy, littered with tents & trash (needles, beer bottles, energy drink cans, bags, shirts, towels).
Part of me wants to think "fucking assholes... there's signs everywhere that says NO CAMPING" and "if you're going to live here on public/city land, at least pick up your fucking garbage". But then I think... "oh yeah, I chose to live in a fucking city and cities are cesspools of greed and filth". I really just need to move to North Bend or somewhere 30 miles out from Seattle where I can still have the nature but not the high cost of living and greed.

I don't know that a picture of a positively identified specimen exists. One of the reasons it's worth investigating any such small woodland/trailside Psilocybe in the northwest. There are surely undescribed distinct species to be found if we don't always make assumptions about identity, and there are species throughout various parts of the world which are probably not nearly so rare as is thought.
--------------------
Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

There are disrespectful ignorant slobs in all walks of life. The ones you encounter you only encounter because they don't have walls. I'm sure there are plenty of people who afford their walls by actually doing harm to or taking advantage of people that would be even worse than the most repulsive in the woods. Save your scorn for them, since the people who are living outdoors aren't likely to be doing that or they'd be incarcerated or able to afford a roof.
Or move, like you said

I've been on this kick lately a lot. I still think there is a lot out there. These psilocybe are small and who knows what's hiding in crazy micro climates.

happyfunguy: You're assuming their situation just like I'm assuming but I presented a few facts. Shelters will gladly take people in if they aren't fucked up. Many of the homeless in the woods are litterbugs. Trust me... I've got just as much anger toward teenagers who roam the woods and litter, or the co-workers of mine who flick cigarette butts on the ground when finished. I was just complaining about THESE guys because... A: someone brought it up B: the trails I know and enjoy are now full of trash and homeless tents/homes C: There are signs clearly posted that say NO CAMPING... so people like me can walk on the trails
I have a hatred for the economic system in this country and can see how the corruption snowballs and then trickles down into the everyday lives of individuals. So I know many people, directly and indirectly are victims of a flawed system. I'm not putting down homeless people... just THESE homeless people making a mess of the small wooded area near my home.

That should not be too hard. You might not be able to do it this season though. Weather is going to change soon.
I would give it two weeks to organize. Make 2-300 fliers. Take some to a church!
Church folk are often very into community work.
Perhaps the police station. Get on the chiefs butt about it. He/She could maybe help.
Also, local businesses.
Could take you a day and a half to get all of this done!
Great idea. Probably want to talk to some municipal people about the problem first.
You can't just go displace people. But the trash can be cleaned up.
