Same here. The internet makes it so you never have to drive anywhere. But, either way you are trying to dry your fungus out. Canid seems to have the best ideas for the technique you are trying.
Good luck. desiccant in every jar will keep em dry like you said.
Cheers

I'm also not a fan of spreading my credit card info on the internet unless I absolutely have to. I've had friends who've basically had their lives ruined through hacking and ID theft.
I typically just use a fan and use the desiccant for preservation, but if I can find more of it, I'd definitely use it in the drying process.

I am completely low tech here. I use a wicker basket situated 1 foot above an electric space heater with a vortec style fan blowing on them in a sunny window.
(Those are some azzies from yesterdays hunt. )
Then pack in gal ziplocks with a desiccant pack.
(that is some cyan/azzie mix )

Any amanita-eaters out there? Found a patch of what I believe to be Amanita calyptroderma but I just couldn't bring myself to try one! I've never seen Amanita phalloides growing before let alone in my area (northern Oregon)so my mind still has a bit of doubt left. Sac-like volva, striate cap margin, beautiful orange to golden cap with a thick skullcap, growing with doug fir...
a nice pair

and two more

any thoughts?

Well phalloides is greenish yellow. But, I have never seen THAT species before. Wish I could help more.
Was thinking panteroid, but, just doesnt look like the ones I am familiar with.

They're incredibly beautiful! I've seen them growing in northern CA before, as well. I've just never seen actual A. phalloides growing before so until I do I feel like any amanita with a sac-like volva will remain suspect for me! Unfortunate because coccoras are supposed to be excellent edibles...

Anyone got an info on morels containing gyromitrin? I swear I read somewhere that they contain small amounts of the stuff. As well as Verpa.

Nope I meant the real deal. I swear I read somewhere that they contain the toxin in small amounts and are cooked off when, well, cooked.
Eating of raw morels is a huge percentage of the poisonings each year from fungi. Or so I have read.

Gyromitrin is volatile and water soluble, and can be mostly removed from the mushrooms by cutting them to small pieces and repeatedly boiling them in copious amounts of water under good ventilation. Prolonged periods of air drying also reduces levels of the toxin.

Yup yup. I know all of that. But thanks. I am wondering, specifically, has anyone ever read about this or know about it. This and it being morels having small concentrations of gyromitrin.

Verpas are the bees knees. I like them better than any of the morels I have ever had.
I don't get what the big deal about morels is. I have little experience with them though.

I have also heard (never researched it tho) you can be poisoned just by drying them and being in the same room if poorly ventilated. Always scared the bejesus out of me.

Crazy. Never heard that before. They taste great but I won't lie they make me nervous.
I won't eat them in copious amounts.
