Job offer from smaller company, more money, need advice
    #19015228 - 10/22/13 06:39 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Alright,

So I currently work at the help desk of a large (fortune 500) company, taking IT calls ranging from just about any issue, and I'm not very happy doing it. All phone calls, audio and video, are recorded and audited as is usual with most call centers. The staff is pretty bleh, the chance for promotion is few and far between, and I just generally hate the place.

Aside from all that shitty crap, I've busted my ass there for 2 years to earn enough respect, that managers stay off my ass for the most part and I'd have to probably assault someone to get fired. I also live about a 10 minute drive from work, dress code is casual so you can wear jeans into the office, and also have the option of working remotely (from home) if you're sick or otherwise can't make it in.

So I got a job offer with a much smaller company, for about $7k more a year, doing about the same job with a much larger potential for growth (or at least that's what they have portrayed). This company is 30 miles across the Twin Cities (so about 60-90 minute drive in traffic), and the cost of gas to get there would basically offset the pay increase or at least eat most of it.

I hate my current job, but I'm wondering if jumping ship to a much smaller company would be a good move for me, even though I make a couple grand more a year with more potential for moving up the ladder. I wasn't actually expecting an offer from this company, so my brain is spinning in circles right now as to what to do.

/rant. Please advice. Shroomerites don't fail me now.

Can't you get a better job with two years help desk experience?

There seems to be a lot of potential for growth in this job, but because of my lack of experience, it seems like I'd almost be going from one help desk to another. The manager did say it'd only be until I was trained in enough to move into the higher level position, but there are a couple of shitty points for taking the new job:

- Starting a new job 60 minutes away with winter looming any week here
- The dress code is at very least business casual, tucked in shirts and the like
- No idea what the work environment is like
- Transferring to another help desk with potential for a better position, but not being hired into that better position

The stress at my current job is really starting to wear on me and I want out, but I'm not sure if this is the right way to jump ship.

I went in to interview for a network related position, but due to lack of experience the offer was down graded to essentially another helpdesk job until I'm trained in.

I have no advice but I have to ask..

How the hell does 2-3 hours of extra driving everyday add up to almost $7,000 dollars a month? Just what are you driving?

I drive an SUV. To get to the interview and back was literally almost 1/4 a tank, so about 1 tank a week if the tank is 100% full. So conservatively $60 / week, $240 a month, or big picture $2880 a year.

That $2880 / year is cash as well, the extra $7k is before taxes, so, pretty damn close to a wash unfortunately. Just checked and no prublic tranportation will get me to the jobs location either.

The more I reflect upon it, it's probably not worth giving up my seniority at my current job. Maybe HR can enlighten me on some upshots to the job, but the more I think about it, if I'm going to bail on the current job it should not be a lateral move with unguaranteed potential.

Idk OP, I work in IT also, and I put in my mandatory few years time at service desks

If this new job offer entails something more hands-on where you actually get to repair things and perform admin/scripting functions, network support, then you should take it because frankly it looks better on your resume.  Most places wouldn't even consider someone that only had service desk (remote support) experience for a hands-on workstation or network support role ---> which would then be the stepping stone to a system/network admin position.  But you can't become a network admin straight from working at a service desk; you need to find a good stepping stone position (like a workstation support tech for example).  If you'd just be at a smaller service desk somewhere, then yeah don't go for it.  But if it is a chance for you to get off the service desk and into work where you actually fix things with your hands (lol) then it would be worth looking into.

It sounds like the only advantage with the new job is upward mobility.  I'd ask around your current position and see if there is anywhere else you can move too.

My only other comment is that two years really isn't a lot of time to expect movement in a company IMO.  If I were reviewing a resume', two years wouldn't impress me as a lot of experience and/or seniority.

You might also consider moving to offset commuting costs.
