There are many bugs!
    #19012548 - 10/22/13 08:29 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

It's easy to forget how many insects inhabit Earth.

Quote:

In the world, some 900 thousand different kinds of living insects are known. This representation approximates 80 percent of the world's species.

(Wiki says 90)

Quote:

Insects also probably have the largest biomass of the terrestrial animals. At any time, it is estimated that there are some 10 quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000) individual insects alive.

Quote:

In the United States, the number of described species is approximately 91,000. The undescribed species of insects in the United States, however, is estimated at some 73,000. The largest numbers of described species in the U.S. fall into four insect Orders: Coleoptera (beetles) at 23,700, Diptera (flies) at 19,600, Hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps) at 17,500, and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) at 11,500.

Most of them are beetles and flies :ifyoucanawe:

Quote:

There are more than 200 million insects for each human on the planet

Maybe we fear and dislike them so much because we are subconsciously aware of their prevalence in the world we like to consider belonging to us. We especially hate/fear them when they invade our homes, because it shows us their dominance in the field.

But yeah, there are many, nevertheless.

When a minster asked what Darwin (or was it Huxley) could tell him about the mind of God, he replied that God had an inordinate fondness for beetles.
Insects are so cool, I know many hate them, but they are an ultra-successful group of arthopods, the first animals to colonize the land. Have you seen the size of dragonflies and cockroaches that lived in the mississippian era?

Rocks speak to me, and tell me this:
The Hell Creek formation is a gigantic slab of rocks that covers several western states. It contains an account of the dinosaurs' demise.  In the late Cretaceous period, the first Cannabis species appear, and soon after, all the non-bird dinosaurs disappeared. Obviously, marihuana killed the dinosaurs. That giant meteor that smacked the yucatan peninsula right afterwards, coincidence.

Insects are like my third favorite biological classification to study, behind kingdoms plantae and fungi.  Insects are da best.

Whenever my family comes out to my garden they always try to kill my spiders and pull up my weeds.  Once they actually destroyed an enormous yellow jacket hive which made me sad.  But the look on their faces when I told them they should leave it alone!  Nobody seems to like bugs.

It's interesting to sit still and look at a patch of empty dirt. Before you know it, you see all kinds of ants, beetles and flies cruising around and stuff. They are almost everywhere. Industrious little fellows too.

The saddest thing about the onset of cold weather is that all the insect friends disappear :frown:

It's cool to see that people here like them. Or at least don't loath them or have irrational fears about them. Though I suspect that those types would be less likely to even click on this post, because they don't want to be reminded lol.

I love insects though. They are like little aliens, except from our planet. They are very real, and very prevalent, and those who hate them are more likely to hate reality/life/nature because insects are a large portion of life in reality.

Many christians are afraid of and hate bugs, for example.

I don't mind insects, I usually don't kill bees/spiders, but I kill wasps and beetles because I hate them.

The insect I hate the most is a bedbug, they are the devil.

That's really trippy. I don't mind insects, most of them are very pleasant and keep to themselves, but some just really creep me out. For instance, spiders and moths. I would never kill one, but if I see one, I start praying that it will get as far from me as possible. Parasites, on the other hand, I will kill without a second thought. I know it's terrible, and probably really bad karma, but I guess I figure it's me or them. Mosquitoes especially get no mercy from me.

I hate when people freak out trying to kill bees when the bee's just minding its own business.

And, fuck mosquitoes.

I'm a bit afraid of bugs, which I know is irrational but I can't help it  mosquitos/bees/small wasps are kinda meh, but when it comes to big bugs, I'm gonna run like hell when I see one  :woooaaahhh:

I really like the iridecent blue mud dauber, they hunt black widow spiders exclusively.
I also encourage king snakes to hang around, they hunt copperheads and rattlesnakes.
