Mysterious Truffle? Large complex mycelium? Please help ID this.

Habitat: Found under the ground in Georgia clay, pine needles everywhere and dead leafs. When found the ground was very dry but light rain has been coming down in the very early morning recently.
I found one still in the ground and one pulled out of the ground possibly by and animal. This appeared like a massive truffle to me since they are around 8 inches wide all around but it appears there is some sort of very tough stem that appears sliced clean on both of the mysterious round fungi I found. I assume a large animal may have eaten part of these.
Out of curiosity I sliced one in half and was surprised to find the most beautiful complex pattern that looked like a thick belt of snake scales. It seems some type of long filaments of some sorts make that appearance but I need help finding any type of identification with this.
Black (in some spots brown) resin like liquid of some sorts seems to be contained in the whole body of the fungi. If touched it's actually quite hard to get the resin or whatever you may call it off your fingers. This interests me even more in what chemical properties or uses this might have.
Thanks, JC

Almost forgot to mention that it has a VERY strong store-bought mushroom smell in the inside.

One cool thing is that the spores do not mix at all with water.
Another cool thing is that they are mycorrhizal with most plants, so you can mix them up with the water you use to water your plants and the fungus will grow in the soil and help the plants.
