Christmas before Thanksgiving
    #19014150 - 10/22/13 03:12 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So I was shopping in costco a couple weeks ago and I noticed that they were selling Christmas stuff... decorations, gifts, candy... all of it. This ticked me off IMMENSELY. But I assumed it was just costco. Over the weekend I went splurge shopping (dropped 3 grand) and other stores were doing it too?!?!

So does it bother you that Christmas stuff is already being sold, and Halloween is not even here yet?
Are you annoyed by stores that sell Christmas stuff before thanksgiving?

I don't understand how things like this piss people off.
I've been tempted to get christmas decorations out the ass just to fuck with people like you.

It bothers me because when it is Halloween, advertise Halloween. When it is Thanksgiving, advertise Thanksgiving. Why do you (stores) feel the need to sell Christmas stuff so early. I don't REALLY mind if PEOPLE put them up because they are not trying to sell me anything, but in the stores they are CLEARLY cheapening the meaning to those who are religious and want to celebrate their beliefs. But honestly, do you want to be the person who has decorations on while everyone is stuffing their face with turkey?? Or still has pumpkins and Jack 'o Lanterns on their lawn...

But it flies in the face of tradition.
Everyone knows that all Christmas shopping should be done between Thanksgiving and xmas eve.

Not so much Halloween. Probably yes to turkey

While I am religious, I would say this goes to ALL holidays. The whole shenanigans before valentines day? Even Halloween to an extent. Easter recently too... Perhaps these are just coincidences, but they ALL have shown a HUGE trend away from meaning, and towards making stores money. Even the 4th of July is turned into a giant barbecue...

That's because retailing is captive to the latest cultural trends, my friend.  Anything to make a buck.

http://www.thestreet.com/story/11304186/1/christmas-wont-come-early-at-nordstrom.html

I have no problem with this. ^^

Yes from a STORES perspective. But I find it sad that out history and culture regardless of religious affiliation is being melted apart by money.

Does Thanksgiving not have VALUES that we as a society would not want to be washed out with images elves and Santa Claus?

I feel SO manipulated when I see such decorations, because I know I will need to buy them, but I always do my best to hold back. If I do get them, then the search for presents sets in, and you have effectively skipped Thanksgiving.

Sure it is fun. But isn't every holiday in between September and December "fun"?
