Pholiota or Gymnopilus?

Habitat: Growing from the roots of a white birch tree. NW corner of Massachusetts
Gills: Orange, turning rusty on old specimens, Attached gills (I think?)
Stem: Roughly same length as diameter of caps, yellowish color with subtle twisiting grooves going up it. Not really sure how to explain it. The stems varied in shape quite a lot, one was twisted like a pigs tail others were pretty much straight.
Cap: 2-4 inches, yellowish orange. Coated with rusty orange spores
Spore print color: Rusty orange - Rusty brown A very dark red color if I wipe them off on a paper towel.
Bruising: Seemed to have blackish bruising on edges of caps
Other information: Very mild anise(ish) scent, Caps were dry to the touch. One of the small caps had tiny white hairs on it, which is a first for me. It looked like peach fuzz basically.
Here's the only picture I could get of the hairs on the small cap, it was really hard to capture them.

Spore color looks closer to that of Pholiota to me. Gymnopilus has rusty brown spores and Pholiota has milk chocolate colored spores.
Try wetting your finger and touching the top of the cap. Pholiota have viscid caps while Gymnopilus have dry caps. When wet Pholiota feels a whole lot more slimy.

It would be noticeably sticky right? It feels similar to gently rubbing my finger on my shirt. Its not like my finger wants to stick to the cap like most of the Pholiota I've touched.
I should note this collection was on the drier side when I found it though.

Pholiotas feel smooth when they dry out, you need to wet them to see if they are viscid.

Is this a Galerina species? I left it so no spore prints

Yes, Galerina marginata. You do not need to make prints because you can see the spore deposit on the top of the annulus.

I did wet my finger before touching them, not sticky to the touch. If I wet the heavily spore covered spots on the caps the spores will stick to my finger a bit.

Would a bitterness test be in order possibly? Here's a pictures of a cap cleaned of spores. If you want a picture of something particular let me know I think I covered it all though.

The reflection is from the sub-par lighting.

I can't seem to find any species of Gyms or Pholiota that have those white hairs on them
They don't seem to want to drop many more spores, I am going to leave them for 24 hours and see if I get lucky.

I don't see any white hairs in your photos.
If you wet your finger and touch the cap and they are not slimy, it's not Pholiota.
Could be one of the species of Gymnopilus with smooth caps. Check to see if they are bitter.
The lack of good lighting in your photos may have made the spores and gills look darker than they really are.

The very first picture I posted has one cap that has hairs. It is closer to the edges of the cap. It was a real struggle to get my phone to capture them.
If you look at the spot where the bugs chewed through the cap to the gills then look a little higher up you should see them. There's some out of focus hairs on the other side you can see a little bit of also.
I took a small nibble test, slightly bitter not what I associate with bitter as hell gym tea though.

The spores seem to be orange on foil and darker orange on white paper, it's still a pretty light print though.

Some Pholiota spores (particularly from subgenus Flammula) can look orange when they are wet and then dry out to milk chocolate. There are quite a few bitter Pholiota too.

Everyone needs a microscope.
If there is a school nearby then you could probably use theirs.

I think it's a Pholiota. If you would like peace of mind you can mail them to me and I will scope them for you someday.
