My new plan...
#19011771 - 10/22/13 01:10 AM (10 years, 4 months ago) |

So, I'm thinking I'm going to save up money over the next 2-3 yrs, in the meantime buying a boat and some crucial supplies (tent, sleeping bag, a rifle, pistol, and maybe bow, camera, lots of ammo and fuel for the boat) and setting out on a worldwide adventure.
Everyone wants to see the world right?
Well, this is how I'm going to do it. I plan on being completely sel-sufficient, hunting and foraging for food, crafting anything else I may need with materials nature provides.
Obviously I don't intend to just fill up my tank, shove off to sea and hope for the best. During the preparation phase, I'll be reading up on edible plants/animals in each country/continent I plan to visit (all of them) and reading survival guides as well.
While I do plan to visit some of the great cities of the world, I will live only in nature the whole time I'm gone. If I'm lucky I'll discover some really cool and historically important shit.
TLDR: I'm going to buy a boat and necessary supplies and travel the globe to learn as much from mother nature as I possibly can.
Time frame? Indefinite.
Anyone else ever consider doing something like this? Think it's a good (or at least cool) idea? Or am I just crazy?

To me, that idea sounds fucking awesome. Just keep natural disaster on mind while you're traveling round the country. For me, i planned on doing something very similar, except in a van traveling on the road. I haven't done it yet, and my source of income wasn't as long lasting as i thought it was going to be, so alas i don't have any money for a van at the moment. Good luck bro, i hope you manage to keep in contact with us on the Shroomery some how.

I'll be able to have contact from time to time. I'll buy one of those phone chargers that draws its energy from fire and connect to internet when I'm in range.
The vast majority of my time will be spent on foot, trekking he forests/deserts/plains/etc. So I'll definitely be reading, re-reading and reading some more, and taking notes.
I'm fully confident that I could survive anywhere within the United States, no problem. But, my plan is to start in South America, wrap around to Hawaii, then to eastern Asia, Europe, Africa and finally back home.
EDIT: I should add that if at all possible, I'll have a companion or two with me. If not, I'll do it by myself, but it'd be nice not to have to be alone through it all. This could take years after all!

Become familiar with the areas where piracy is a problem. Straights of Malacca, off the coast of both Somalia and Nigeria, and some of the areas around the Phillipines to name a few.
But yes. I want to do this too.

Dually noted. I hadn't really considered pirates.

One day I want to sail solo non-stop around the world. Fewer people have done that than have been in space. The route is through the Southern Ocean, and at one point, the closest human beings are the astronauts in the International Space station.
Hey, you might like to read Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum. He was the first to ever do it.
Happy sailing

That's pretty cool, I didn't know that. I'll make it around the world, but my primary objective is land exploration.
I'll check it out, thanks!

If you bring some mates along make sure they are sea worthy mates. Traveling around the world on a ship is a huge test of everything from fortitude to cheerfulness to integrity to friendship. Few are potential ship mates to take on such a journey - rare people. If you are proficient in research I got all faith in you doing this adventure without dying before it's completion Good luck captain

since this is your 'new plan'... what was the old one?
it also sounds like you'll be trying too much IMO -- docking a boat then backpacking around the country. port fees and stuff will add up.

There's only two people I can think of that I'd take on such an adventure. They're both seaworthy, and neither are faint of heart. They're also my oldest friends. One already said he's in, haven't gotten ahold of the other yet. Thanks for the support DC.
I guess there really wasn't an 'old plan.' I see where you're coming from, but I'll be anchoring in remote inlets where there will be no docking fees. If I need money at any point, I have no problem taking a break from the adventure to make some. I'm not in any huge hurry. Hell, I may be on the move for the rest of my life.

Good luck! I've seriously considered doing something similar, but after about a year of contemplating it and doing research, I realized that there's no way I'd survive. Even if I managed to acquire enough food, I'd probably die from tropical diseases or deadly microbe infestations.
I hope you're a really good fisherman. Fish will probably have to be your main source of protein. Do some research on the fishing techniques that rainforest-dwelling people implement.
Be sure to get vaccinations for Yellow and Typhoid Fever. Another thing you need to figure out is how you're going to have a constant supply of clean drinking (potable) water. You should boil any water before drinking it. The problem is, in the rainforest, you could end up sweating out over a gallon of water a day, so you'll probably be spending a lot of time prepping your drinking water.

We need to create water capsules that are the size of sweet tarts but give you the hydration of a gallon of water

Oh, vaccinations are a must. I'll get vaccinated for everything possible before I go. The only time I think water or food will be a problem is in the desert. Like I said, I'll be in no rush to complete the journey, so time consuming tasks aren't a deterrent. Right now I'm broke and jobless, so it'll be a couple yrs before I can go. Plenty of time to learn. Ans I'm only 22, so its not like I'm running short on time.
@dontknow- that would be nice, but I don't expect to have anything as convenient as that.

Lol, I hope so Sheek. I will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for ancient ruins and the like.
I think that my real biggest challenge will be keeping my dog thoroughly fed. She's smart, and will undoubtedly be able to get her own food, but I'm sure she'll still need me too. I'm damn sure taking her though, she always goes with me on my adventures.

This may be of interest to you.
"In this remarkable documentary, Ed Wardle is dropped into the unforgiving Yukon wilderness with just basic provisions and cameras to film himself as he attempts to survive completely alone in the wild"
It's harder than you might think hunting and foraging your own food.

I've actually seen that before. I know it'll be incredibly difficult, and I'm sure there'll be times when I have do go a few days without food. I'm cool with dealing with that. It's worth it for the experience IMO.
I figure there's three possible endings for this: 1. I complete my journey with loads of newfound wisdom, and probably way physically stronger. 2. I, at some point, realize I'm not equipped and come home, head hung in shame. 3. I die out in the middle of nowhere, never to be heard from again.
Whatever happens, I'm alright with it. At least I can say I tried.
