Does my fruiting chamber need a window? (with pics)

Hey guys,
I've been reading up on shrooms for about a month now and my first grow is going well. Big shout out to the Shroomery and all its members for helping me get this far....you've inoculated my brain with this new hobby and the its taking over fast!
Anyhow, my cats got 5 quart size B+ BRF cakes that will be ready to fruit in about a day or so.

hes constructed my fruiting chamber and plans on doing a 12/12 cycle under a large CFL grow light. My question is: should he construct a window in the top of the lid? Or will the light that gets through the sides and the 1/4' holes in the lid be sufficient?

If a window is necessary how big should it be? and will simple sran wrap do the trick?
Thanks, PsilocyBen

Never send a cat to do what people can do better. Those are the wrong jars and you will not be able to fruit those as cakes.

Ouch man, Bigger is not better with PF tek/BRF jars. You're never going to get the cakes out of those jars in one piece.
It is astonishing how well they colonized though. People always rip on the tall half pint jars but I think they just pack their substrate to hard.

You would want the holes in the corners to, i dont see any tho that could just be the pic. You want a clear lid, just try and find one, its easier then crafting one.. i agree that those are the wrong jars and fruiting them is gonna be a bitch. Might be best to use them as spawn. Idk. No offense meant to the OP, but where do newbie find all this bad outdated info? I did some stupid shit when i started, but thats was long before i found the shroomery. I just dont get it.

Since you wont be able to birth those cakes you'll want to use them ASAP if you're going to spawn them to bulk. If you do spawn to bulk I would do coir+verm and properly pasteurize it. When spawning to bulk you don't want to let your PF cakes consolidate You want to try to catch the mycellium at it's most active growth phase not while it's digesting the food it's colonized. If you need help looking up how to do any of the following try using the advanced search engine typing the keyword and click the trusted cultivator box. If you have troubles still post here or PM me.

Carefully break those jars and take your time while doing it.

Sorry for the typo guys. The jars aren't quart size...they are pint size. I'm Canadian so I get messed up with the conversions sometimes eh? I think they will fruit fine, although the jars are not wide mouth. None were to be found so I plan on carefully breaking the jars before putting them in the fruiting chamber.

Don't break the jars....smh. just reach a spoon in, spoon out the cake and spawn it to a bit of coir. Or crumble it up and case, FYI didn't care to reread to see if it was BRF or grain. Either way don't break the jars
Mason jars are thick and even with a ballping hammer its tough to safely break them without destroying the cake.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I'll let you know what I do, but my original question has never been answered. Should I cut a window in the top of my lid? Or will it be fine?

Since your breaking the jars! I guess you will have cakes. I advise against this. anyway. Yes you need light from the top, the heat and direction of light help with the function of a proper SgFC. Look into this established tek if you want optimal resjiults.

IIRC the heat from the light(suspended above, yet near the top of a SGFC) helps with the lifting of humid air and the introduction of fresh air. Something to do do with heat rising while heavy air sinks. Mushie will grow toward fresh air and light. I know this to be true as when I had my light to the side of the chamber, they grew in That direction. If you or the OP would like links, Im sure i could find I dont doubt your knowledge Notahacker420, Ive seen you give many advisable info to new members. You do great things for the community. I'm just stating my knowledge as I know it. Im not after a arguement. Constructive debate is welcome however, as thats what life is about.

No, not at all.
The heat from the cakes will help with this, as well as the humidity while it rises naturally, but the heat from the light source is not going to do much but heat up the chamber if it's close enough.

How does the mushrooms direction of growth have to do with the lifting of humid air?
They grew towards the light because they were deriving energy from it.
