First try at liquid culture - Hericium
    #19010279 - 10/21/13 07:35 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello All,

For a research project, and also, as an aside, for food, I've grown, what I believe is Hericium coralloides in liquid culture. I used the nutrient recipe found in The Chemistry of Fungi by Hanson, plus the antibiotic kanamycin.  I have had it in a shaker at 30 deg C since Oct 11, and below is a picture of what has grown.  Please tell me how it looks.  I have no prior experience with liquid culture. Does this look typical?  The media has gotten darker since I put it in, is that normal?  My plan is to extract from it, and I will be away for a week, will it survive another week?

~SB

That looks a bit odd to me but I have never tried propagating a culture in a shaker.  I have never attempted coralloides but my Hericium erinaceus LC did not "ball" up like that.  My typical LC's have a central point with aerial myc radiating out.  Maybe the difference is due to the shaker.
As far as the darkening goes I have had a few do that.  L. cinn will turn a LC a dark orange and Morchella a dark color as in your photo.  It could be normal but like I said earlier I have no experience with that specific culture.
Your LC should survive another week regardless.
Plate it before you use it though.  Make sure you don't have any bad guys and make sure it is viable.

Will it survive in the shaker at 30 deg C?
Or should I put it in the fridge or something?
