My first grow log! (includes everything I've learned w/pics)

So here goes nothing. My very first grow log!
I'm mainly doing this as a means for me to track my progress, document my mistakes, and hopefully help others to learn from what I've done. This is my first time ever attempting to grow cubes, and although I'm no where near the finish line, I've got to say that this has been quite the learning experience. Everything i learned thus far has been thanks to the great people on this forum, so most of this information is essentially recycled from others. However, it will be relating to my experience as a completely new grower. (as such, some of my info may be wrong. so to those who are more experienced, feel free to chime in! in fact i encourage it!)
My first materials:
Penningtons WBS Pint/Quart Jars 16qt Presto pressure cooker Z+/GT spore syringes Tyvek (and a lot of other small things most people will find around the house. strainer, pot, etc.)
First attempt included 14 pint jars, following Franks guides. I ended up leaving the jars out too long before inoculating, allowing the WBS to dry. I also inoculated in open air. All of the jars sat in a tub, in my closet, and were totally stalled. a month and a half later.. 3 of the jars actually had growth! the other 11 are still dead..

Ive since built a SAB, TiTi, and moved on to Quart jars with better lids.
My Still Air Box(SAB):
Sterilite tub drill 5inch hole saw

As you can see, its very simple. During construction of the holes, i ended up cracking the tote! To avoid this, run the hole saw in the opposite direction after getting the initial center hole. this will keep the hole saw from catching the plastic in a bad way, and causing it to crack. I lined the hole with silicone, which is keeping it in working condition for the time being.
To use, i simply wipe down the inside with alcohol and then dish soap and water. i sterilize myself as good as possible, and wipe down any surrounding areas. I then place the tub lid down and put my jars on top. I place my tub upside down on the lid, and go to work! (my tub doesn't have a clear lid, so i make due with it being upside down. This obviously is not ideal, but it works for the time being)
My Tub in Tub incubator:
2 64 gal tubs 200watt aquarium heater air pump bubble stones bleach zip ties thermometer

I keep it at a constant 77F which seems to do the trick. As you can see from the jars i currently have loaded, ive switched between different lids quite a bit.
My SHIP/tyvek lid set-up:
silicone tyvek 1/4in drill bit

i originally had just one hole in the lid, filled with polyfill. I have since upgraded to this set-up. Just throw a square of tyvek over a hole in the middle for GE, and fill a hole with silicone to act as a self healing injection port. Simple as that! I am moving on to better lids soon, and will update when i do.
My quart jars have slight growth, and the 3 pint jars pictured earlier were just shaken today. i will take picture soon and update accordingly. But so far, that's where I'm at! I am working on getting agar dishes created, and possibly a liquid culture. I will grain to grain transfer some of my master jars. I also acquired more spores, and will be doing many more jars in the next few days. Considering all of this, you can expect me to update this post very often! I still have a LOT to learn, and i hope one day i can contribute back to the community and help people here the same way they have so kindly helped me!
Update 10/24:
soaked 6 quart jars worth of WBS two nights ago, and simmered/PC'd yesterday. let them sit overnight, and noc'd em up today with some creeper spores! Here's some pics of the process and the supplies i used to prepare my WBS.

Here's another picture of my tub with the new jars thrown in, as well as an update on the growth of my quart jars(only 2 are colonizing thus far ):), and the recovery of one of my pint jars!

more updates to come when it gets to be that time! i will be preparing more WBS tomorrow, and inoculating 6 more jars with one of two strains. hopefully the recovering jars will hurry up so i can G2G :p
Update 10/28:
well, i fucked up ):
My inexperience when drying the WBS, and a lack of understanding as far as how much moisture content is needed, has caused 95% of my jars to fall to bacterial contams. Below is a picture of what my bacterial contamination looks like

I have since revised my drying technique, and i feel like I've got it dialed in pretty well. Basically, i let it steam dry. Instead of spreading it out on a screen, i took the advice of others, and left it to steam dry in my strainer. within an hour, the seeds seem like they were the perfect moisture content.
I now have 6 new jars placed in my TiT, which should be better off than the rest. Let's hope that is the case. Other than that, i have 2 quart jars out of 14 that are growing mycelium, and seem to be trying to fight off the bacterial contam. I'm not sure which is winning the battle, but only time will tell. The other 12 jars all have excess moisture, and spots of bacterial contamination that are completely keeping any mycelium from growing through. real bummer ):
My 3 pint jars that i shook are recovering very nicely! i will take pictures tomorrow, or the next day, to show their progress. It seems like they will be fully colonized within 2 weeks, probably less, and i will be G2G transferring them into quart jars!
Update 11/1:
We've got mycelium! I just checked my jars, and to my surprise, the mycelium seems to have beat the bacteria! I'm stoked
The 3 quart jars of Z+ are absolutely killing it. They're probably about 30% colonized, and will be ready for a nice shake tomorrow. The pint jars that i shook are recovering nicely all except for one.. It seems to be recovering very slowly, but recovering none the less!
Out of the 14 jars prior to the 6 i recently loaded, 12 of them are showing signs of mycelium. Albeit only small spots, its still growth! I will take pictures as soon as it's more noticeable.
Now i DO have one issue.. A few of the jars that i made lids for using tyvek in the middle, have an orange substance covering the tyvek.. I have a good suspicion that moisture content in my TiT is causing rust problems. Will this affect my jars? Did i do something wrong and that's why it is rusting?
Update 11/9:
Things are looking up!! i shook 2 of my Z+ quart jars 3 days ago, and WOW! this is what i call a recovery!

its like this on all sides. i think they are ready to be G2G'd, does anyone agree? or should i let them sit a few more days. (keeping in mind it will take about 2 days for me to get jars set up and ready to grain transferred.)
And here's a picture of my most recently inoculated jars. they are doing fantastic! Obviously drying my seeds correctly has made a HUGE difference in the time it takes for the mycelium to grow. I'm stoked!

Will be doing a G2G very soon!
Update 11/18:

waited a few extra days to make sure these were really fully colonized, but they look perfect and are going into a tub first thing tomorrow!

These are two of the newer jars which i shook 2 days ago. one is recovering beautifully while the other one.. anyway, more updates soon as the tub is made.
also bought a space heater for the room that will house the tubs. i'm assuming that's a good idea right?
Update 11/19:
Made my first mini-mono! i pasteurized my substrate last night using a meat thermometer and my PC at 140-160F. then today, once it was cooled down, i started the mono tub process. this involved soaking my grains in water for about 15 minutes, then draining into a bucket. then i layered and mixed my substrate/spawn in a tub! i essentially just followed franks guide for this portion. Thanks Frank!
some pictures to show a few steps of the process.

let me know what you think. i cant wait to have some mushies!
mini-update 11/19:
as per the suggestion of NotAHacker, i have taken the tape off the lid of the tub, and taken the tub itself out of the bag. now it can receive ambient light, and should have enough GE to colonize correctly!
Update 12/05:
Whew, so a lot has happened since the last update. My first tub had some issues and didnt ever fully colonize.. but it began pinning so i threw it into fruiting yesterday! Just made a new mini-mono yesterday as well, so hopefully that one colonizes correctly. some pics of the tubs and light set up!

Also went ahead and finally got to try my hand at a G2G transfer for my amazonian strain. all the jars, but one, were lost to bacterial contamination. So luckily i was able to turn that one jar into 7 more! This is a picture two days after the transfer (wow this stuff colonizes fast!!). Also a picture of the space heater currently heating the room (:

Setting up jars currently for another G2G tomorrow. and will have some real mono-tubs in the near future. Hopefully well have some pics of mushrooms soon!!! Cant wait
Update 12/21:
ok, so its been awhile, and i have been super busy at work. as such, ive sort of neglected my hobby which really bums me out. On top of which, i thought my first tub was a dud. it just wouldnt fruit!!!!
But patience perseveres, and although the flush is absolutely nothing to brag about, i got mushrooms! Im so stoked, you have no idea lol. i just picked them, and i cant wait to try them out. I havent gotten to do as many G2G transfers as id hoped. But i have at least 12 fully colonized jars, so this weekend will be dedicated to this hobby, and hopefully ill pump out a few more tubs/jar sets soon!
i dont have a scale, so i dont know what the weight is like.. but if any trained eyes can give me an estimate that would be great!!

As you can see. Lots of side pinning. im definitely going to be using a liner on my future tubs. its pretty disappointing to see all the mushrooms on the side, and none on the top lol. either way, this is my first tub, and im happy with the results! it can only get better from here!!!
Update 12/24:
Alright, probably gonna end this thread pretty soon. ive got two tubs in fruiting, and the first one is just about dead. Also, im currently in the process of setting up some substrate for two more mini-monos! leaving tonight to go see family, so i have to get this done quick. Gotta finish letting it soak, then pasteurize, and throw it in the tubs by tonight.. hopefully it cools enough by then.
Also ive been completely neglecting to do my G2G transfer.. ive had jars that i PC'd, sitting in the PC for 3 weeks -__-. i suck. hopefully those are still good to go so i can G2G them today.
Anyway thats it! I figure this thread is done once these tubs are fully finished. It kind of feels like that is the end of my first experience. Since i have essentially messed up every part of the process at least slightly, and then revised it the next time over, it feels like the perfect place to call the end of my first grow when i finally have a tub that i can throw all my acquired knowledge into!
Thanks everyone for all your help, and i hope these last two tubs can really show what ive learned!!!!

I tried wbs and ran into the same problem that you did. I couldn't seem to get the moisture content right. I switched back to Rye and have had massive success. IMO, when simmering, the Rye is more forgiving.
I don't want to come into your thread and tell you what you're doing is wrong. Many people use WBS with huge success. I just use Rye out of personal preference.
BTW. I love your writeup. I've recently gotten back into this hobby, and I'm using the exact same procedure as you (except the wbs). I wish you the best of luck!

I had so much damn trouble with wbs moisture to the point where i would lose half of all my jars to that infuriating yellow slime. To fix this, ive started PC'ing twice. The first time for about 40 min, take it out, shake, then let it cool. I then add up to 2 tablespoons of dry verm depending on how much condensation and water drops inside the jar. I then toss them back in the PC for a solid hour and theyre good to go. Its much more time consuming but worth it IMO.. Losing jars left and right made me want to tear my hair out lol. I thought i nocc'd a half dozen of these style jars, checked on them ten days later only to realize i never inoculated them at all, did a g2g and they all pulled through despite the ten day head start for contams.

My only reply is directed at the proper techniques of hydrating WBS.
What I do, which is essentially RR's process for rye grain with some tweaks:
- Wash seed until water runs relatively clear, removing floating debris if you so please.
- Soak in water and an eyeballed amount of gypsum (1-2 tsp. per cup of dry seed - quantity not likely a huge issue in this stage) for a minmum of three hours.
- Drain and cover with clean water, or keep the soak water - no biggie.
- Place on stove on High, stirring occasionally, until boiling (!), and wait ~2 minutes.
- Turn heat off and immediately dump into a strainer to steam off excess moisture, turning with a spatula occasionally to aid the process as quickly as possible.
- Wait until visible water is entirely gone or nearly gone from the surface of the seeds.
- Load into jars, with a pinch of gypsum if you'd like, shake, and PC as normal.
This process has been easiest for me to initiate the cooking process. I wouldn't apply this to rye grain as-is.
Simmering WBS seemed to be slightly more difficult to hydrate the seeds without getting them mushy or bursting. Since the heating process is less about softening the seeds (as if for human consumption) than it is about getting just the right amount of water into the outer layer in order to finish the cooking process during sterilization, it seems that boiling for a short period does the trick nicely. I check the moisture content during those 2 minutes to compare the softness of the outer layer against the post-soaked seeds. It's a subtle difference, but a little pinch between my fingernails is a useful guage.
It looks like you're pretty much doing the same thing. Good luck!

Thanks for all the support guys! I am thinking about trying rye next time after i use up the last of my WBS, just to see the difference if for nothing else. But when drying my last batch, using the steam method really worked wonders! I have no water pooling in any of my jars, and the moisture content seems right on, so i have high hopes (:

I've been using the same jar lids for about almost 2 years now and they're all rusty around the spots where I drilled my holes. Hasn't been a problem for me. The moisture is probably coming from inside your jars though, not the incubator.

after you inoculate how often did you shake your jars to break up the grains or WBS?

I scoop mine out of the hot water with a mesh scoop and lay them out on news paper, then I mix it around on the paper until the paper is soaked. I then transfer them to dry paper and do the same thing until they do not leave my hand wet after handling. Takes about 10 minutes.

i only shake once when the mycelium has covered one whole side of the jar. so when it is about 25-30% colonized! after that i just let it sit till its done (:

thats not a bad way to do it. i find it easier to just let it steam dry though. its as simple as dumping it back into a strainer and letting it sit for 20 minutes. so far it has yielded the best results of all the ways ive tried!

Looking really nice man. I need to get myself one of those strainers and spoon things for my wbs, just need to go shopping! Hopefully we will see some life here soon:)
I've got my first mono going, not doing well either but hopefully patience pays off right? I was also thinking of getting some smaller tubs just to have backups for extra colonizing jars and whatnot.
Can't wait to see more! Nice thread!
