A Moral Dilemma...
    #19009471 - 10/21/13 05:09 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Here's the synopsis:

My cat attacked a small bird and broke its wing. My 7 yr old girl and her friend shoo'd the cat away and was tending to the bird and crying.

The bird was panicking and trying to fly, heart was racing. Wife was hysterical and I was like "great, now I have to deal with this now"

I told them I was going to take it to the "bird shelter" on the way to costco (because I had to go shop there anyway). We used a small donut box packed with grass and leaves for a bed. I left (alone) to go deal with this as the bird was suffering.

I looked the bird in the eyes before I wrapped the donut box in 2 plastic bags. Then I stomped the box as hard as I could with my boots on. I even gave a courtesy stomp to make sure it wasn't still alive.

When my wife asked how I dealt with it I told her. She was pretty mortified... When I asked what she would have done, she said she would waited for it to die naturally.
I told my kid that the people at the shelter had to put the bird down because it was suffering.

So my wife and sister in law think that I was wrong, but I think they were wrong.

Who's right?

Could you not just tie popsicle sticks to the broken wing and wait for it to heal? :uhoh:

Mercy killing, better a quick death than a slow miserable one just because someone is too scared to do what they have to do.

What you done may have technically been the most merciful thing to do, but it was pretty violent, and it's only understandable that they were surprised/creeped out

to add more the story...

the girls tried to put the bird in a tree. As soon as they stepped away the cat attacked the bird again, then again... then again.

lost half its feathers, heart racing, wing bent, can't move. Pretty sure its not going to survive.

Wife didn't want the bird in the house at all.

if it was just a broken wing i would have put it in the forest, something would of ate it, circle of life

if it had gut spilling out or something lethal but slow, i would have stomped it

Cat brought me a live rat yesterday (about 15" with tail). Dropped it at my feet and meowed proudly.

Again, right in front of my daughter... She cried for more than an hour.
I took it out back and crushed its skull with a wine bottle and threw it in the garbage.

I hope this isn't a daily thing now.

would you get rid of her?
I had to deal with rats on my crawlspace last winter. Cleaned up at least 2000+ turds and poisoned 3 HUGE rats and removed them.

Hopefully never again

I probably just would have let the cat finish what it started. That or got my BB gun.. Don't think I would have stomped it to death. I don't think you're in the wrong for killing the bird though.

I really don't want her eating gross diseased rats. She is bringing me gifts of fresh meat in her eyes. She dropped it at my feet and then meowed and brushed against my leg. Then trotted off

I don't have any guns so I improvised.

If i was injured and going to die, I would want to be put out of my misery. Would I want to be stomped to death by a boot...probably not, but hey, I bet he didn't feel it after the second stomp

Shoulda let the cat eat it. That way everyone wins, even the feline.
