As often as you hunt, how are there any mushrooms left in your woods?

It was growing alone. Clear on the other end of the log was some Pholiota, but they were 30ft away and never get this big.

I'm gonna say Pholiota cause the gills should be darker at that stage of maturity if it was Gymnopilus.

Looks like a Gymnopilus to me. This is where a spore print would pay off.

The spore print on foil I brought home looks orange. I scraped some spores on my plastic scalpel and looked at the under 450x. I tried scraping some on a petri dish with no success it seemed. So I just viewed the tip of the knife. I cant see the shape of individual spores, but its definately orange. How is it that on paper it looked brown?

I posted on this thread about this mushroom  still thinking you guys are right who said Pholiota. This link shows a pic of exactly the shade of orange my print showed on foil but the paper print shown above doesnt say rust brown or burnt orange to me.

I think that is what this is looking at the spore print. In that complex at least. Gyms have a broght orange spore print not to mention they are prolific spore droppers so it is really really orange in 24 hr. Gyms have a typical spicy even sweet smell. very pleasant and a very bitter taste. So wlays give your orange mushrooms a little wiff and a little taste.
