Opinions on best hunting times?
#19008220 - 10/21/13 12:04 PM (10 years, 3 months ago) |

wanting to get more into the hobby of hunting. Many threads have had inputs saying 1-10 days after it rains. Or the first hot/warmer day after rain. so i'll ball park it about those days; but as for time of day? I've heard some opinions saying in the morning (when the ground is still moist from dew), other people say at night definitely, and some say it doesn't matter at all. Any more opinions to narrow this down? General rules of thumb?
Thanks

Probably 3-4 days at the most. I'd go in the morning because you would have more daylight to see the mushrooms.

Also, people were all excited for Hunter's moon and going to hunt at like 1-3a.m...my question is why? its bitch black, maybe some light because of the full moon but still, i feel like using a flashlight is just a pain in the ass no?

I dunno. Sounds more like a celebration than a hunt.

I go hunting every year in west texas, the best times to go are in the morning and the evening. it is unlikely that you will see anything during mid-day, but this depends on what you are hunting. if you are hunting birds, any time of the day is good. if you are deer hunting i would recommend looking for fresh tracks before you go. after you have found a good area where deer are active, try building a small stand to sit in. this is the site i use to build my deer stands- http://www.freedeerstandplans.com/

I imagine OP is talking about hunting mushrooms. Good to know though.

Im with Ganzig on this one! Whenever and wherever possible. Different shroomies show best at very different times of day/night and moisture concentrations. Some of the most beautiful shaggies i've ever seen show up in Tucson,AZ after months of no rain and only after the thermometer breaks the 110 mark! Lesson here is JUST HUNT.

what are you hunting? deer? upland game? moose? right now its small game and upland opened in my area on Saturday and mornings i spend trying to flush birds that are just getting out and about to feed. if im going mid day i focus on thick heavy cover that birds will sit in after everybody barrages them all morning. and in the evening youll see them walking back to thick cover or a tree to sleep in. the reason people are saying after it rains or other different weather is because the animal will act predictably different. the day after a really good storm ends there will be a lot of wildlife activity because they were all hunkered down. but a light rain deer will still move around in and it will conceal your noise as you approach them. idk if you have any questions i can be of a great resource for info. just ask any questions, im sorry im done ranting im stoned

sorry guys, i guess everything you say really can be two different things. i like too hunt mushrooms 2-4 days after a long soak and its even better when the temp drops a considerable amount over the couple days of rain

I read that 7:37 in the a.m. Is best in a spiritual sense. Like 7 is the heavenly number. If you are at all spiritual you would be there and looking at this time i just go whenever. You can even go at night with a flashlight. Some mushrooms reflect light really good
Good luck!

Early morning = less maggots and more time to spend hunting.
Night = can not see as much & if you are using a flashlight and someone does spot you, it's highligh suspicious.

It is true. Mushrooms do most of their growing before dawn. Get there before the insects and herbivores.

As illogical as it seems, I have found that when I hunt eary morning the fruits have less bugs in than when I hunt mid day-evening.

The Practical Mushroom Encyclopedia *: It may seem surprising, but time of day is most important to the mushroom collector. This is because mushrooms grow almost exclusively during the hours of darkness. As a result, the best specimens are picked when they are fresh early in the morning before the rising temperature of the day has brought out the flies to lay their eggs, so giving rise to insect infestation, or the animals of the woods and fields have had their pickings of the overnight growth, which can be quite amazing in its quantity.
* Jordan, P. & Wheeler, S. (2011) Hermes House (not an especially brilliant book but it has its uses) Also, if you ever cut the stem to look for little holes up to the cap, you will quickly notice that there are far more as the day progresses!

I see. So you mean mushrooms that came out that night.
Hmmm. Ok.
Is there any proof of this night time growing? I have never heard that mushrooms grow during the night more than the day.
This would seem an unlikely attribute to put on all species as well.

I have my own observations and a source, that is all.
When I started going out early it was a breakthrough in terms of finding lots of mushrooms in good nick.
Geoffrey Kibby was the consultant on that book, and I don't think he would put his name on it if it wasn't well supported.
So I feel I am benefiting from that info. But .

I wouldn't say they leave but the next batch of eggs is not going to be laid. Especially as the mushroom has just grown a lot, it is likely to be more visible.

I can back this up, I only go in the morning and I'm done and back home by 10. It takes an hour to drive each way but I pick a load every time I go around 7am compared to at night and evening. Less bugs as well.

This thread has been closed.
Reason:
Quote:
5. Do not make threads or posts discussing or reporting the weather. This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. As a general rule of thumb, if it has rained within the last 1-10 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, and the time of year is correct then it is very likely that the mushroom you are looking for is growing.
