cased cake container grow
    #19003375 - 10/20/13 11:01 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So Ive been looking for a bulletproof way to make cased cakes and came up with this idea

Tupper ware glass containers with plastic lids

On the lid it has a synthetic filter disk in the center covering GE holes and then silicon injector sites all around

This container was loaded with whole LGBR and then a layer of dry verm was sprinkled on top to cover the surface for casing effects,

The LGBR preparation was to cook it using only water ,then rinsed with cold water and then drained/dry for about 3 hrs shaking the colander every now and then.

This container was PCd and once cooled down inoculated with the Cambodian Cube spores

After this was fully colonized it was placed in an FC and the lid of the cased cake container was taken off

The plan is to fruit right from the container so should wrap the sides with foil or black plastic to block light on the sides and prevent side pinning.

Here is how this container colonised

These were taken right after inoculation

Only 4 days after inoculation

@ 7days

@ day 14

Unfortunately this is where I messed up, when setting it to fruit I foolishly dint kept the verm layer moist and it dried out the cake even shrunked a bit after more then 2 weeks and no pining i gave up on it

the tub I was using dint help in keeping the RH right and that coupled with not misting properly was a recipe for failure

Now Im getting ready to start my next fool proof cased cake container grow and would appreciatte some advice/help

The casing layer appeared to be dried when the lid was taken off after colonization completed, would it be a good idea to use field capacity hydrated verm?

The FC used was terrible, the only good tub i had was in use so what I did was to use two flat type of tubs, one upside down on top of the other making a dub tub

and there was a gap between the two were I guess humidity escaped tru
also had a hard time holding it together

Now for the improper misting the misting was only done in the walls of the dub tub and dint mist the verm casing layer directly

misting the casing layer directly is what should be done right?

is this what I should do diferent this time ? mist it enough to keep the verm layer moist and use better a tub?

Thanks for any help, once everything is ready for the next attempt will be posting it right here

Good vibes ~DM

Ran out of whole LGBR so was considering using some brf mix to load this container and case with the thin layer of dry verm

but I think colonization might take a lot longer in this size for brf vs whole grains

So IDK maybe ill go get some more whole LGBR

Not too bad. You understand most of the reasons why it failed.

This is kinda like a giant version of my seed & plastic tek. A few considerations for you:
Smaller plastic containers will sterilize much more quickly and thoroughly than a giant heavily-loaded glass container, and yield more efficiently.
Giant straight-grain subs have lots of potential but not the water to make use of it.
Additionally they have the conundrum of not having enough surface area to fruit their whole yield potential but too much surface area to retain moisture. This is why they need to be defended by casing layers and watered to allow several strong flushes. Otherwise results will be pathetic.

One of the causes of your failure is using a vermiculite casing layer. It's a very handy ingredient for great casing layers but is extremely poor on its own. It gets kinda solid and can easily dry; mycelia like neither.

Use a different casing layer, one with organic (as in formerly biological) ingredients, pasteurize or otherwise treat it, and crumble it on after the cake is colonized. They're easier to use and keep hydrated (yes, by misting it directly as needed).
I typically use sifted potting soil, or peat moss with some garden lime added.

As for using BRF/verm...  If you do, you'll be dunking after the first flush.  If you use whole rice each cake may have greater yield potential but you MUST bottom-water the grains during flushes to see anywhere near it, otherwise the wet verm sub will seem to yield well more.
If you use whole rice, and no inner layer, remember that you can shake it after 20-40% colonized to finish colonization quick! (btw with little containers there is no advantage to shaking, only disadvantages)

For your fruiting chamber... If it is too big, your casing layer and substrate will not be able to maintain humidity on their own, causing your experience of the layer drying up and the sub shrinking too much too soon. A proper casing layer will help this but with too great of a proportion of air to moist surface you'll still dry up. Misting your tub can help but loss is likely still quicker from the casing layer so it's more important to keep that lightly misted.
Experiment with your chamber size etc.!

G'luck with your next attempt!

Hi there Violet,

your input was very helpful, just what I needed to hear and learn

Now I feel more confident about this next attempt, will go get a smaller tub and follow your advice to the letter

Also will be looking into smaller containers and checking out your tek, sounds nice

Thanks for chiming in and helping out!
