I use the matchmaker key. I came up with Gymnopilus bellulus.

It's a Tricholomopsis species. Compare T. sulphureoides!

I don't believe so, the description doesn't match and the spore print is orange not white. The mushroom itself is much more orange than the pictures show, but no red or green on the cap.

The spore print pictured above is yellow and it looks just fine for Tricholomopsis.

The only camera I own is a very old iPhone and I don't think the photograph is showing well. But the spore print is most definitely orange. I wish the pic I had would convey the true color of it. I think that would help you immensely in this shroomies identification. But thank you so very much for your help.

In that case, it's probably a Gymnopilus. It not G. bellulus, which is glabrous and has a reddish stipe. I don't know any Gymnopilus off the top of my head that have a radially fibrillose pileus.

The spores do look too dark for Tricholomopsis, even with the inaccurate pictures. I'm sorry for misleading you.

The spore print seems pretty light to me. Letting it sit longer might help give you a better picture.
I have had the same problem with my phone changing the color of prints if they are too light.

Can you think of a radially fibrillose species in Hesler? Something about the gills and the spore mass just doesn't seem right for Gymnopilus.

i agree, they are totally bizarre...

i thought Pholiota at first...

but, i think the gill shot in photo 6, might seal the deal for Gymnopilus.

Honestly when I first spotted them I thought they were some type of hypholoma until the spore print. Okay so when you say Hesler are you talking about gyms that Lex Hesler named or some kind of mushroom species?

Lex Hesler and Alex Smith wrote a cursory monograph on the genus Gymnopilus in North America.

I didn't keep the one I printed I'm pretty skeptical about eating ANY wild mushrooms. I just LOVE to find, study, capture photos and identify them. I leave the eating of the edible/active identified ones to my hubby. I do know exactly where they are to get better samples and pics though. Probably will go back after lunch today so let me know if I should get a better sample.
