Ear Surgery in a Couple of Weeks.

When I was a child, about 2 1/2 I had a mastoidectomy and until about 7 years old I had multiple surgeries on my right ear including tubes two or three times. The last surgery was in 1992 when I had the hole patched from the tube that was removed in a previous surgery.
Now, 21 years later, I have a marginal perforation that keeps getting infected in my right eardrum again. My doctor and surgeon knows I don't want a surgery, but because the wound isn't healing he's highly recommending it be repaired in order to avoid a possible mastoidectomy from the tissue getting infected. Basically if I want to keep my hearing it's highly recommended I get surgery.
Now I've had a few perforations over the years, but they're always in the center of the eardrum, this is my first marginal perforation. He will be doing the surgery in the next few weeks. Now the last time I had a surgery on my ear was 1992, a long fucking time ago, I imagine procedures and such have changed. He said it would take 1-1.5 hours to complete. What should I be expecting? How much pain will I be in and how quickly will I be up and about? Anyone with experience recently?
I'm a student at the moment (full-time) so hoping this doesn't fuck me over as far as school goes. Last surgery I had was an ACL surgery and that was terrible, I imagine this won't be That painful?

I've also had mastoidectomy & reconstrcution of my right eardrum after having tubes a few times. The doctor's chalk it up to my right eustachian tube being too small to regulate the pressure. I haven't had surgery since the initial procedure (probably 8 years ago), but I have been having trouble since I flew this past spring. It was sharply painful, with like a squeaking sound. It hasn't happened since, but I can't "pop" that ear anymore and it always feels stopped up, but it isn't painful.
How did you know you had a perforation? I'm thinking maybe that's what happened to me on the plane.

You should go into your ENT doctor (ear nose and throat) and they'll look in your ear and check.
