How do I get an even PIN SET!!!

So I'm coming to you as a mildly experienced mycologist with one question. I under stand the concept of everything but I'm just having a problem with an even pin set with my mono tubs. Iv done a little looking around and from what Iv learned there are many factors that influence this. I've got a fan with two 6500k florescent shop lights in my room. Iv grown a couple tubes but cant dial in this pin set. I was wondering if you can tell me how you get your pin set so even, or direct me to a link you may have written already.

1) Isolate a good strain on agar or AT THE VERY LEAST clone a "good performer".
2) properly "dialed in" fruiting chamber / proper fruiting conditions
3) caseing??? ugh
okay, so here's what I've gathered so far:
the mushrooms that I fool around with (Reshi, oyster, enoki, etc.) were all culture syringes purchased from sponsors right? when it comes to these medicinal/edibles they tend to "have an even pin set", they typically fruit out at the same time, I think that's because the isolation/cloning has allready been done for me. (but then again, they're aggressive woodlovers so I dunno) If you'reworking from multi-spore and don't feel like fooling around with agar, cloning a "good performer" is the first place I would start.
"good performer" is defined as: pinned and fruited early, looks BEAUTIFUL, and is...remarkable not NECESSARILY "BIG OL' GIANT THANG"
once you get past that step, then I recommend focusing on your fruiting conditions: i.e. dialing in your monotub or whatever: search for anything with "Frank's" and "Tek" those seem to be popular and may be more or less fitting to your needs :/
casing - ugh...casing aren't necessarily necessary for some species, but, the consensus seems to be that they even out pinsets. so...here's a good 50/50+ casing tek
so yeah, those tend to be the "even pinset" factors I can think of off the top of my head, if I missed anything I'm sure someone will come along and correct meh
good luck!
edit: to clarify my disdain for casing, I simply don't case enough/rarely need to or probably should be but am lazy
note: a proper casing will provide a nice micro-climate for the mycelium to start pinning; thus even pinsets allround
edit edit: Oh shit this ain't no 'Advanced Mycology Question" lol

Sounds like what iv read so far! Iv been fooling around with agar lately and managed to get one mini mono tub to fruit my first time playing around. I cloned one of those mushrooms earlier last week and are ready to be moved to either more agar or some grain jars. Before I do this though im going to finish my flow hood this evening so I can avoid some of my contams. So with all that said im working on isolating agar as much as I can.
I also have been using casings. So far that seems to give me the best results. I use the same 50/50 link you posted there.

that is a terrible pinset IMO, probably an bacterial infection. More isn't always better.

How is that a bad pinset? Those mushrooms look edible to me!
Im About to start my next set of tubs for this month. Im going to focus more on keeping the substrate at a good field capacity, im using Transcending-Lifes tek on mono-tubs...I seem to have the best results when I use his tek on mono tubs. Im still trying to dial in my fanning and misting.

Those are all weak stringy pins that will most likely abort. Yes they are edible but do you really want to eat 200+ shrooms that weigh .01g

They were a little smaller which is normal when that many grow but I can promise most did not abort.

Shrooms will pin where they have the best microclimate to do so. So OP what is it about the areas where they're pinning that are different than where they aren't pinning? It's part genetics, part environment. Dial in one of them perfectly so you can work on dialing in the other perfectly. I'd recommend starting with dialing in the environment first

I agree. However aborts tend to pack a punch

Someone at the end of that thread said the slatting tek is "outdated". IIRC it was NaH. Wondering what it was replaced by?

NaH and myself said in that thread that it's outdated. It's not replaced by anything it's replaced by proper fruiting conditions. Slating isn't going to help you any unless your conditions are bad and then it might promote a better micro-climate. But your microclimate will be just fine if you dial in your fruiting conditions just right. If you want an even pinset you'll have to test isolates out.

Are the surface area gains considered illusory? I'm assuming so but why?

Getting an even pin-set with MS can be difficult. The various genetics in MS will colonize and fruit differently.

The most important thing IMO for an even pin set, assuming you're nor using a casing layer, is to make sure the substrate has completely colonized before you introduce fruiting conditions. So make sure you're doing that first.

The surface area gains of slatting. You know, it was claimed that the slatting increased surface area by 50%. I was asking if these gains didn't lead to larger yields.

It's going to yield what it's going to yield. More pins less weight a piece or less pins more weight a piece. Chances are you'll get more aborts as the substrate won't be able to handle maturing all the pins you might get. It's not like our substrates are 1Ft deep there's plenty of surface area.

Ohhhh....that was a failure.....no it does not increase yield.

Im in the process of building myself a flowhood so after i get that built ill step up my game with agar and work more on my isos, I also managed to get my hands on a 6 jar magnetic stirrer. Only if I could speed up time!
