Cannabis abstinence - nightmares
    #19005921 - 10/20/13 08:59 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Holy fuck, now I wasn't prepared for this.

(Straight user for 2 years, small amounts every night, always slept intoxicated)

The first 2 nights without weed I have experienced some of the most vivid and terrifying dreams imaginable, I mean really disturbing to the point where I almost have to prepare myself to return to sleep.

I know marijuana interrupts rem sleep, and im now, for the first time in a while returning to it, but what about the night terrors? Is this just what's been beneath the surface all this time but being suppressed? Because if so, fuck knows what mushrooms would reveal.

Anyone weed users relate? It's like a nightmare on fucking elm street.

i know that feeling man, you get like multiple dreams every night too.  For a while I had all these dreams and i struggled the next day when i'd think things that occurred in dreams happened in reality.  I talked to friends about things i did in dreams with them not remembering.  At that time i was horribly depressed and lonely and dreams felt like almost an escape sorta.  like the alice in chains song when they say "sleep so my teeth dont grind" I kept having a dream where i was chased and i couldn't run fast enough, like i was running in water or with something pulling me back.

Yeah that is pretty much as you guessed, probably has been going on in your head already but suppressed by the weed.

I am a very heavy user and when I quit for a few months my dreams got really vivid. Never really got any nightmares, although my dreams are always pretty off the wall crazy.

The worst "nightmares" I have had is when I was heartbroken by some girl and would dream I was back together and then woke up depressed, but nothing like Nightmare on Elm Street

In the past 3+ decades I've been without weed at times - dry spells, drug tests, just stopping to get a clear head... and each time this happens my night times become adventures. When I have weed, I barely remember any of my dreams. But when i'm out, I dream so much it gets exhausting. I never noticed an increase in nightmares over what I  would normally expect, but the dreaming really is amazing. I can see why a band chose the name "Dream theater" because that's what it's really like. Great name for a band.

I just returned from a particularly upbeat scenario where I set a man on fire with my hands at some traffic lights and watched him burn.

The only symbolism I can draw is that the man is representing the 'addiction', and I'm obliterating that character through abstinence.

But nah, probably just a fucking psychopath

I had to stop smoking almost 20 days ago as I'm most likely about to be on probation for who knows how long, and damn my dreams are crazy, not to mention I dream multiple full length dreams in one night, they seem so real that when I wake up I'm surprised to be back in my own room.

Crazy shit man.

I have had several apocalypse themed dreams where I have fought, killed, and shot people . . . Not sure the symbolism in that . . .

I'm a day+night smoker as well, and when I have the occasional break I used to get vivid dreams - but lately it's been something I intentionally induce. I wake up each morning with a vivid dream in my head just from practice. And I smoke every night. When I am not smoking my dreams are a little more scary, but usually dreams are usually just a crazy-hazy adventure that I (sort of) went on.

Even though I'd say 20-40% of my dreams are chase dreams, they usually aren't very terrifying if I was a little mellowed out :rasta:

I wish you luck with your terrifying dreams man, but maybe the best bet is to take control of your dreams. Look into what dreams are. Learn about them. Maybe learn how to turn them lucid - especially if you can remember that terror usually happens in a "different" headspace. And if you realize that a different headspace can mean a dream (that happens every fuckin' night), you take control of your it, you can alter what's happening. Try... Closing your eyes in a dream for a few seconds. And then open. Where are you now? If you are in another terrible situation, this method didn't work.

I had the same issue when I quit a few months back. I was having terrifying, apocalyptic dreams every night. I'd wake up at 2 in the morning panicked and not wanting to go back to sleep. But it does get better, the vividness starts dulling down and the dreams become more "normal" (whatever that means as far as dreams go). Hang in there.

I usually have this 2 to 3 days after going sober. Yes, it can be very scary and feel very real, but it can also be amazing.
Don't worry about it, it will go away after a few days. Just let it happen and remember that it's just a dream. You can try to understand why your subconscious is producing these images and maybe get something out of it.

I was in the same boat OP... Lasted for a few months

The worst dream I ever had in short.

I remember walking into a church off the street seeking absolution from a high priest. I remember feeling like my skin was burning, so I approached a priest and asked "Father can you help me". He touched my shoulder and looked at me in the eyes with a saddened look and said "I cannot help you there is a demon inside you who will not leave"

I woke up from the sounds of demons hissing after what the priest said.

I'm not even religious, don't take drugs. :mushroom2:

At one point I had sleep paralysis accompanied by extremely vivid nightmares almost every night If I didn't smoke up before bed. But eventually I could tell when I was falling into that state cause I would hear an intense ringing/buzzing sound and id just wake myself up before I couldn't move. I hardly get them anymore though thank god.

dreams of intense speeding up, acceleration towards light or darkness in some dreams. The feeling is that of more real than real.

Honestly, the first few nights can be intense. Like your brain is making up for lost time.

Then you start to catch up and the dreams normalize.

REM sleep is important for mental health. It is wise to break from weed from time to time. Dream on!

The nightmares are common, it is your mind expressing subconscious desires and fears that were suppressed by the cannabis intoxication. Try keeping a dream journal and make a note of what the recurring theme is.

Your fire dream is likely the desire to purge something, it could be the drugs, or something else. The fire generally represents purification, the person could be an inner demon. Try to identify the person or characteristics of the person. The stop light and intersection is a symbol of caution, delay, and crossroads points.

It may mean that some sort of lifestyle change may be ahead for you if you are willing to let something go.

my dreams are more vivid when using drugs, and arent all that fantastical atleast no monsters or science fiction stuff, probably because i don't watch much fictional movies or shows. Only quality reality television like Storage Wars and Baggage Battles

We are not talking about just any drugs. Do you smoke heavily of cannabis, as in several times every day for months or years at a time?

"(Straight user for 2 years, small amounts every night, always slept intoxicated)"

the OP also talks about Night Terrors

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_terror

Well I'd smoke weed throughout the day everyday for the past decade up until now

I don't keep a dream log but most of the "nightmares" i can recall or otherwise dreams that i wake myself to get out were people attacking me, trapped in rising water, or animals charging at me... not that scary really

I've been here visiting my relatives since spring from Vancouver and I have an oz of weed that i've barely smoked since the summer (I got food poisoning at the end of spring and some sort of complication or maybe something unrelated and tripping out and smoking weed just isn't as fun as beforehand... too bad the nearest doctor is hundreds of km away)

I'll have cravings for a few days after long periods of use but after that i don't care anymore

years ago id take big gravity bong hoots of packed bowls and right now ill take a small hit out of a joint and put it out for later

enough to make music more enjoyable than it already it for me sober (all the vitamins and supplements i take seem to help with that)

and for when i have a headache

Yeah...a t-break does lead to some vivid dreams.
I'd term them just "different" though.

Even using heavily I'm still lucid in my dreams and have full dream scenarios that are usually stupidly realistic (or fantasy like). Honestly my dreams are much more intense than any drug I've ever done. Similar to the mindfuck of deliriants with a positive vibe (mostly).

Drugs just change my dreams. Makes them a little different...I can usually tell the difference...pretty cool. Sometimes they're just the same. Maybe it's the afterglows coming into play. No idea but I like the dream states after certain drugs. Heck even sleep deprived amphetamine psychosis dreams were interesting lol.

I think it's probs just your dreams being different that makes them seem especially vivid. Or repression if you dream far less on weed.

I dream far less on antihistamines/Ambien/Xanax but even then...the dreams have the hallmark of the drug when I do have them. Pretty interesting tbh.
