Could these be my buddie's first P. Weilii find?
    #18996267 - 10/18/13 04:00 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

He's really hoping these are P. Weilii. They were found on the side of a hill in bermuda grass, right below a baseball field. There is very light blue bruising, which took forever to start. The gills are a light brown color, but the spores have already been released. Smell is similar to cubes, but maybe a little bit sweeter scent. Any identification would help my friend. Thanks!

Looks like yes. I can see some of the bluing on the stems. I'm not 100%, so don't go eating them until a TI responds. However, I'm about 95% sure. If you eat them and get sick, don't put that on me!!! I still say wait for a trusted identifier

If I could smell them, I couldgive you 100%. Weilii have such a unique smell to them. Once you smell it, you'll never forget it.

Those mushrooms are pretty beaten up which makes them hard to identify. I can see what appears to be blue bruising which is consistent with a Psilocybe. Other than that I'm not going to be much help.

Did he do a spore print?

No, the spores dropped before he found them, and i know that's the ultimate determining factor. Although these are not an actual pic of the mushrooms found, it's exactly what they looked like right before being picked.

This is rarely a suitable explanation. It is worth considering that while a muhsroom may have already produced all/nearly all it's spores, and shed most of them, this does not mean that a print will not be obtainable to some degree, or that a spore deposit is not otherwise obtainable.

One may even resort to the damp cotton swab in the gills method (which I should hope explains itself). This later is particularly useful if the mushroom has dried out, but with the substitution of the damp swab for a wet one. Alternately, you may rehydrate a piece of the mushroom so soften it.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

He tried making a spore print but nothing dropped after 4 hours. Thanks for the swab suggestion Canid!  Here are a couple q-tip swab pics from 2 different light sources.

Cool. Remember that 4 hours can be grossly insufficient for some spore prints. Of course it is not always possible to get a print in some instances and circumstances as well.

Those look purple-brown to you? They do to me.

I've printed a few Caerulescens and it usually took over night to get a good print.

I tried doing one for 4 hours and it didn't drop much.

I thought they looked purple brown, but I know sometimes people see only what they want to. Even-though it's unofficial, these were found in White County. I'll have him take pics the next time he goes to that spot and finds more.
