o.k the first grow didn't go so well because of a contaminated syringe ,but hopefully this one goes better.
here is the syringe in question that was used now empty

cakes in my SAB before inoculation
and cakes after inoculation

All cakes are in the traditional PF cake style hope i see some growth soon

so far no signs of growth unlike last time the contam started to show its ugly head around days 2-4 so if i don't see by day five i might be safe oh ya the LC was sent as a replacement for the last one by TSD.

Yeah, get a strain from someone else. I got a contaminated culture from TSD too. Seems sloppy to me even though they sent me a replacement.
I have Shiitake on agar if you feel comfortable doing agar work

If you can buy a plastic tote and cut two half-circles in it, you can mess with agar. I fought it for so long and in the end everyone was right, it's really not that hard. Yeah you'll have some contamination with a shitty still air box but more often than not it works out fine.
Especially if you do like I did and use those little flat square-ish mason jars instead of petris. Then you don't even need para-film. I've had very few problems since I switched to those.

Most Wal-marts should have 'em, (made by Ball but I can't remember for the life of me what they're called) and you can see on the lid (wide-mouth for scale) all I use is a 1/4" or so hole with a filter patch siliconed in. I'm no agar expert just a noob like you and I've done really well with these. Tape over the hole and PC with the agar in it so no need to pour agar inside a SAB and risk contam there. Just pull off the tape while it's still hot for minimal condensation (you still get some, just pour it out inside your SAB before you throw your wedge in).

Sweet you already got the silicon there then too
Agar is kinda expensive but a little goes a long way when you're working small scale ($20 or so should get you all you need for quite a while, I got from out-grow). Malt extract is cheap and you need very little. Grab a scalpel handle and 100 sterile blades on amazon for like $14 and that's pretty much all you need. Like I said I'm not one of the experts but I can help ya with what works for me (technique wise and such), being pretty new at it as well, if you decide to go the agar route.

hey Forrester, I have seen those jars and they are tempting... Do you use a filter disc under that hole? Is the hole only to help with condensation?
I buy agar agar powder at the asain mart for 1.50 for 25 grams. For 1 liter of water I use 20 grams agar, add 10 grams light malt extract, teaspoon of yeast and the mushrooms love it
Someday i will try potato water agar.

I just cut a little square out of a filter disc and silicon in under, that way I can make 4 lids out of each filter disc. Hole is mainly for gas exchange and yeah it helps let some of the condensation out while its cooling.
I so wish we had an asian market around here! Good point, that's definitely the place to go for agar if you have access to one.

Just make sure it 100% agar. Some of the stuff in Asian markets have preservatives.

Telephone brand agar is 100% agar, no sugar, no sulphites.
I get mine from asian market or vitamin store. NOW foods makes agar that's pretty affordable. I bought pretty much a lifetime supply a while back for 20 dollars. It's available cheap if you know where to look
I bought 100 polypropylene plates for 20 bucks, that should last me a while, I premix and PC them too since I don't have a flow hood. I also don't buy the normal nutrients, plenty of crap in your cupboards at home that will serve as nutrients for your agar. AKA corn syrup, molasses, sawdust, nutrient yeast, yeast, potato flakes, etc, etc, etc.

You wont find agar at walmart, you'd have to go to an actual asian grocery store.
