I've seen those before. There was probably mold in the jar. The smell it, find a way in, and literally eat all the mold.

Fungus gnats. The filtration system obviously wasn't strong enough and a fly got in. I've even seen them cut a tiny hole in the aluminum foil and plastic bag to get in!!
They will eat anything, from mold and mushroom mycelium to cactus seedlings and roots!

I don't know what kind of bugs those are or if they consume the mushroom mycelium as well, I'm guessing they probably do. It appears though they are attracted solely to mold contaminated substrates since the contaminate batch was the only ones they got at with the mold disappearing completely shortly after, although that was after the jars had been moved outside. There's no way they could have survived the sterilization process they had to have gotten in afterward.

Yes, they got in afterwards, as I said, through the filtration system. They are fungus gnats, and they are attracted to fungus, both to mold and higher fungi. Either way if they get in, so will the mold spores, and if the substrate wasn't contaminated before, it soon will be.

Bugs can weasel their way through the verm layer even if mold spores can't. But yeah if they get in I'm sure they'd bring mold spores and probably live mold fragments in with them.

Yeah, exactly, that's what I was referring to, the fly bringing the spores in. I fight a loosing war against these bastards in my seedling trays every winter, they get through anything, and when I grew shiitake I remember them cutting a perfect little hole in the spawn bag and getting inside.

You guys are both right. It was definitely after I inoculated the jars. I keep them inside and in a cabinet that hardly gets opened. Three of the ten jars got contaminated, which I suspect were before the flies / larva.

I use micro-pore tape for cooking the jars, but never re-taped after inoculation. I guess the only explanation is a fly somehow got through the small holes in my contaminated jars and laid eggs.

It sure made my skin crawl when I found it. I mean finding contamination is bad, but when its moving, it's REALLY bad. Does anyone else feel kind of itchy after watching this?? :crazy2:
