Because 1. It is just as physically addictive as cocaine or heroin, arguably even more so.

2. Because it's an accepted social activity. 3. Because you get a psychological addiction AS WELL as the physical addiction. The psychological addiction to smoking is arguably 10x worse than the actual physical addiction.
Cocaine and heroin just have much worse withdrawal symptoms when addicted. But it's easier to get hooked on tobacco faster. Most people don't get addicted to heroin their first time trying it.. but many people get addicted to nicotine.
Source: Daily smoker for 17 years. Just quit smoking cigarettes ~2-3 months ago and have been vaping my ecig since then. Still getting nicotine but toning it down little by little.
I did quit cold turkey 2-3 times. Wasn't overly difficult, but I quit due to peer pressure and not because I wanted to. I ended up smoking again after a couple months each time.
You are over any physical addiction within a couple days to a couple weeks.... but the psychological addiction and "ritual" of wanting to smoke is much harder to break and can last for years. Shit, I've talked to people who quit smoking 20 years ago and they tell me they still sometimes crave that ritual

i'd say it depends entirely on the individual. people can get addicted to coffee just as much as tobacco, even certain fast foods. i agree that withdrawals vary.

Tobacco is the most addictive thing I've tried. Even after a month, I still have cravings as if I quit a day ago. The cravings are the most intense of any drug I've tried.

Yeah caffeine is very addictive too.. I used to work as a barista and I felt like a crack dealer at times, people would go nuts if they don't get their fix.
nicotine though is one of the most addictive substances I've ever run across. That and sugar.

Me and my friends would smoke joints with plenty of weed and tobacco alike day after day. Then you'd maybe go on holiday or something comes up and not smoke anything for a week. I'd feel no withdrawal symptoms from any. I presume to start getting physically addicted you have to first want to be, and to want to be addicted to cigarettes is extremely stupid in my opinion. I also had a friend who wanted to learn how to roll zoots so he would buy bags of backy and practice with them. Then he would smoke the ones he rolled. It had the opposite to a 'cool' effect though because he would roll the worst roll-ups I'd ever seen and had one of those awkward draws noobies do where they have to really concentrate and tense up until exhalation.

Tobacco is an entheogen. You don't have a respect for it. Nicotine is a nice soothing drug. Now I want a smoke, but alas all I have is dip.

Some times if I'm stressing out I'll go buy a pack of cigs....mostly because I can. Smoke one or two then not touch em for like 6 months and by then they're all dried out and unpleasant looking so I just throw the rest out.
Nicotine just makes me dizzy...probably just the action of doing something mind numbing/moving my hands around is actually what calms me down.

If their corporate cigs then their not harsh but distasteful. If their natty's their harsh but taste good. Cigarettes are the lowest quality tobacco so I don't know why they're the most popular.

I hear that if you were to find a wild tobacco plant and prepare it and smoke it, it would be a completely different animal from a cigarette.

I smoke because I have social anxiety, and use it to keep myself occupied.
For many smokers, it isnt the nicotine addiction, they are addicted to the habitual part just as much.

And MAO inhibitors.
Working with mainstream smoke collected from commercial cigarettes we confirmed that cigarette smoke is a potent inhibitor of human MAO-A and -B isozymes.
Tomas Herraiz, Carolina Chaparro, Human monoamine oxidase is inhibited by tobacco smoke: β-carboline alkaloids act as potent and reversible inhibitors, Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, Volume 326, Issue 2, 14 January 2005, Pages 378-386, ISSN 0006-291X, 10.1016/j.bbrc.2004.11.033. (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006291X04025999)
The correlation between the levels of the βCs norharman (inhibitor of MAO B) and harman (inhibitor of MAO A) in tobacco smoke and the proportion of the inhibited isoenzymes in the human brain measured by PET strongly support the notion that these two βCs are responsible for the inhibition of MAO A and B in human brain from smokers.
Hans Rommelspacher. Isoquinolines And Beta-Carbolines As Neurotoxins And Neuroprotectants. Current Topics in Neurotoxicity Volume 1, 2012, pp 115-124
Platelet MAO-B activity, plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol, plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine concentrations were significantly lower in smokers than in nonsmokers, whereas plasma norepinephrine did not differ.
Ivan Berlin, Sophie Said, Odile Spreux-Varoquaux, Robert Olivares, Jean-Marie Launay, Alain J. Puech. Monoamine oxidase A and B activities in heavy smokers. Biological Psychiatry. Volume 38, Issue 11 , Pages 756-761, 1 December 1995
Inhibitory activity towards monoamine oxidase has been found in a solution of cigarette smoke. The inhibition was irreversible [in the context of a two-week time period. Look up reversible and irreversible MAOIs for more info on this]. When tissue slices of rat lung were incubated in the cigarette smoke solution or alternatively, exposed directly to cigarette smoke, monoamine oxidase activities were reduced drastically. Similarly, human saliva after cigarette smoking also exhibits considerable MAO inhibitory activity.
Yu PH, Boulton AA. Irreversible inhibition of monoamine oxidase by some components of cigarette smoke. Life Sci. 1987 Aug 10;41(6):675-82.

Does accessibility play a factor in addiction? Tobacco must be harder to quit because it is so socially accepted and common compared to even marijuana let alone cocaine and H. I've always thought this about alcohol as well. Accessibility plays a big factor in relapses..

Yeah, drinking and smoking being socially acceptable (although I suppose tobacco less and less with each passing year) makes it much harder to quit. If I go to a bar with my friends and I'm trying to quit smoking it's hard because everyone steps out for a smoke, or we sit outside and everyone is smoking. People don't step outside and slam some H or bust out a line of coke (not that people don't do other drugs at bars, but it isn't nearly as pervasive). It's hard enough to quit something that is so addicting without having other people use it in your face. It takes incredible will power quit smoking while being around a bunch of smokers; even more so if you're drunk.
