Help to identify liberty cap/magic mushroom complete newbie
    #19003287 - 10/20/13 10:29 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi Guys,

This is the first time ive ever been on a liberty cap hunt, i was hoping to have my first trip tonight if possible. I live in the UK and from what i have found out the only kind of magic mushroom we get here is the liberty cap. I spent hours today gong through fields and grass and came back with about 20 mushrooms, of which 5 i think might be liberty caps. I have included a picture, in the top right are the ones i think might be LC. The reason why ive included the other mushrooms is just in case and are magic! after all they are the ones im looking for!

Habitat: I found them growing in a open field. Im from the uk - oldham area
Gills:
Dark brown to almost black

Stem:
long thin stem, i think it was white/cream when i picked them. turned a dark brown now

Cap:
bell shaped with small nipple

Spore print color:
havent done one yet.

Bruising:
no blue that i can see

Other information:
they smell like mushrooms from the supermarket, very earthy but weak

I appreciate any help given to try and identify them, i realise its not an easy thing to do, especially for me as i just dont have the experience!

1 is Psilocybe semilanceata, well done. 2 is Protostropharia semiglobata. 3 & 4 are inactive Panaeolus spp.

It isn't accurate to say that libs are the only magic mushroom here, but they are among the most potent and the easiest to collect. Others are Panaeolus cinctulus and Psilocybe cyanescens. Gymnopilus dilepis is an uncommon invader that may yet prove popular. Pluteus salicinus also contains psilocybin but good luck amassing enough (I have maybe six from the whole of this year). To the best of our awareness European Gymnopilus junonius isn't active .

thanks for your help mate i really appreciate it!

It's a pleasure alphadog. I am sorry to say that 5 libs isn't sufficient, you want around 30. But I am pretty confident that having established the ID you will find a lot more nearby. So good luck, and do keep us posted as to what else you find!

btw you separated those out very impressively for a noob, you have a good eye.

There were tons of other types about that i definitely knew werent what i was looking for, but as you said i know exactly what im looking for now. il have to try another area tomorrow...

i think its time to go for a hike!

thanks for the compliment, i just hope i dont pick poisonous ones by mistake lol!
