Jury rigging a laptop/charger to bypass the DC power connector.
    #18995957 - 10/18/13 02:40 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Sup guys.

Long story short: my laptop will not charge or turn on and I'm going to need some files on it before the new parts arrive. I did some quick troubleshooting with my multimeter and it seems there is a loose connection between the AC adapter plug and the laptop's power socket. Basically, my plan is to cut the adapter cable and strip the wires, then solder them to the corresponding leads within the laptop.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me as essentially all I'd be doing is removing the power socket and adapter plug from the equation. I'm familiar enough with the theories and applications of electricity and circuits, but I'm a bit rusty when it comes to computers so I thought I'd get some second opinions before operating on mine.

Thoughts?

Don't do it. the pads where the jack is soldered on to the motherboard (not all are, some jacks have a cable and plug onto a socket on the motherboard, but same applies)are close to other components and traces. Either get a new jack (or jack w/ plug- look on Ebay) and do it right or send it off for repair (Ebay, again) if you don't know how to replace it.

many laptops use a pig tail plug for the female side so replacing the jack is as easy as opening the case and pulling it out.  if recovering files is really that important, it is much easier to remove the hdd and put it in a tower and dump the drive.

This. In addition, getting to that spot so that you can solder there involves taking the entire laptop apart and that can be iffy and is certainly quite some work. Not to mention you may not be able to restore it in its original state anymore.

But OP, it's not really clear to me where you located the problem? Is it somwehere between the AC outlet and the DC plug of the adapter, or have you localized it more specifically?

Well, I can reach the power jack simply by removing the bottom cover of the laptop where the ram, etc. is accessed. Also, was thinking about hooking the wires up to the power jack itself instead of the motherboard, there's a little copper contact plate and a silver prong for + and -.

And to answer your question koraks no, I just found that it lies in the connection between those 2 parts and left it at that.

Still might do this even though its not so urgent anymore, just for kicks. The replacements are en route anyways. Just been busy though, and I'm preparing to eat shrooms with a bud who hasn't done them in 20 years.

If I get around to it tomorrow, I'll definitely post the results.

Let us know how that works out. On most laptops I have seen, when there is an ac adapter plugged in, a contact in the dc jack opens to remove battery power to the motherboard. The power from the adapter runs the computer and recharges the battery through a circuit on the motherboard. Soldering your adapter wires directly to the motherboard might bypass the circuit that controls charging the battery, with unexpected results ( think of an overcharged battery, very hot battery, exploding battery)

Seriously... you don't want an exploding lithium ion battery...

It's 95% either the adapter itself or the DC jack. Just order a $20 replacement AC adapter.. if that doesn't fix it you can solder on a new DC jack and they cost like $5 or some crap..or do it the other way around.

DC jacks can go bad quite a bit. I've repaired about 20-30 of them in my time and it's usually a very simple swap.. three or four points to solder.
OR sometimes it's just a bad/loose connection and you just need to desolder/ clean/ resolder the DC jack to the board.

Either way, fucking with electronics / batteries when you aren't really sure what you're doing is asking for trouble. What you are proposing, you could easily bypass the overvoltage protections

Did you know you virtually can't extinguish a lithium fire with water?

As long as the AC to DC power supply (the "brick") you can solder the wires directly, I've done this before. Just make sure to get the polarity correct.

See, I knew I wasn't crazy! Although I would probably study the design of the parts in question before doing anything hasty.

Almost makes me want to do it anyways just to put the whole thing to rest. :crazy2:

If it is just the adapter and you try that all you'll end up doing is fry your mobo and maybe burn your house down. :laugh2: Just go spend 30 bucks for a new adapter.
