Reishi dosage

I have 11 oz dry and 4 oz wet of some ganoderma lucidum.
I want to steep it in hot water for a few hours, strain, and evaporate a bunch of water, pour, and then freeze the water into ice cube trays.
Does anyone have any recommendations on the ratio of water to reishi? and how much water should I evaporate?

zee_werp's Extraction method
What I do, is I get about 12 days worth of reishi (for me thats 48g dry @ 4g day, a smallish-medium dose I believe). Get the shredded reishi and add some water, enough to cover it and then some, so that they are floating around in the water. Boil that for 2-3 hours. If the water level drops too much add some more water. After 2-3 hours boiling, strain the liquid off into another pot. Keep the reishi chunks in the original pot and add some water. Boil the reishi chunks again for 1-2 hours and then again (3x in total), each time straining the liquid off. In the mean time, put the strained liquid onto medium heat and let it reduce in volume. Wait until the volume is such that it will fit into 12 ice cube trays in your freezer. Pour the liquid into an ice cube tray making 12 evenly sized cubes. You now have daily doses of reishi ready to be used in whatever way you like. I simply add a cube to a little hot water and then chug it down, followed by some plain water to wash away the bitter flavours.
Maybe this method will help you

I've read about alcohol extractions. What benefits do they have vs. water only?

Alcohol will extract the triterpenes which are not water soluble, so you won't be getting some of the benefits of the mushroom if you don't do an alcohol extraction as well.
The anti-inflammatory effect for example, is from triterpenes. I'm not sure which others in particular...

What Forrester said. Reishi has triterpenes and polysaccharides; for maximum benefit use alcohol AND hot water extraction. Then combine. He has a great Tek for it.

Sure but only in terms of the solubility of the compounds, but when talking to release compounds,I do not think when I boil Reishi tea the triterpenes remain in Reishi mushroom?!. They certainly are released, and wen they enter to our body and they certainly dissolve there. I'm not a medical person but certainly what I said should be true.

You may be right
To me it seems easy enough to just use alcohol to dissolve the compounds. Seems like you would get more of them, more efficiently that way but I guess we don't really have a way to find out. As long as you powder/grind the mushroom well before boiling I'm sure you're right and you'd get plenty from the tea.
Couldn't really count on your dosage being even across the ice cubes when the compounds aren't in solution though.

I am with forrester on this one. All the research I have done on medicinal extracts of mushrooms show that the alcohol is necessary to remove the compounds. Water just can't break them apart into a soluble form.

I've done the water extractions and now I have some 190 proof alcohol.
I"m assuming I should I add some alcohol, let in sit for a couple of days, strain it, let the alcohol evaporate and then do it again with the rest of the alcohol?

2 week soak minimum, once. I have not been reducing down my alcohol, only the water portion. This is a recent thing and it's mostly to keep the shelf life longer. If you reduce it down your overall alcohol content is going to be much lower.

Thanks for the info.
I just looked at my reishi and saw mold. Could I still use the alcohol to extract it? Or will the alcohol also extract bad mold stuff?

On the fruits or the substrate?

Yes that matters greatly. If it's on the fruits and its a small amount I usually just rip that part off. But if it's fully covered or you are using substrate that is has mold in it I don't know that I would be using them. You would be extracting the mold properties as well.
