I always wondered why people smoked until I got addicted. Usually you start smoking because your friends do and the buzz feels great, especially after getting high. You think you won't get addicted and then suddenly your like fuck it Im just gona smoke a few more and then suddenly your addicted. The withdrawal is unbearable, it's very difficult to function normally at work because your pissed off at everyone and you can't focus for shit, time goes slow and you go nuts.

Because they start as a teenager wanting to be cool and do something 'rebellious', and find themselves some years later smoking constantly and unable to quit. They can claim it calms their nerves, but it doesn't, not really. It's disgusting, damaging, expensive, and you can never quit completely and rid yourself of lingering remnants of addiction.

cuz nicotine is a quality drug, but then the chemicals that are with it cause withdrawal if you go without the typical nicotine source e.g. cigarettes

The majority of people who smoke started when they were teenagers and too stupid to know how easy it is to get addicted to Nicotine. It's a bitch of a drug to quit, worse than a lot of hard drugs.

Because it's addicting as FUCK.
It started out just smoking a cig after we would toke weed, then we started buying our own packs. It's all over by that point.
Don't start man.

There is a guy in my class who started getting hooked on tobacco after smoking joints filled with both weed and tobacco, he also claims that he now enjoys it because the smell reminds him of being young and in his grandparent's house .
Sometimes I envoy smokers at my college; IDK there seems to be something very sociable about going out to the smoking area to smoke, you know you get to meet new people, and connect better with people you already know through sharing a hobby (or maybe that should be an addiction ). Also if you really wanted a fast hook up it is so easy to find someone smoking weed because almost everybody is smoking it at my college (actually one guy told me of another guy who was doing MDMA out at the smoking area ), like where else are drugs so convenient?!?

i started around 18, never got addicted although if in the right mood i can smoke a pack in a few hours like a champ. by mood i mean , , etc..
it makes a buzz feel better or if you are thinking a lot it can calm your mind and lets you think more clearly, but just because it helps in certain situations doesn't make any less harmful. it makes a person more tense and anxious throughout the day if they don;t smoke, this applies mostly to daily smokers.

Because 1. It is just as physically addictive as cocaine or heroin, arguably even more so.
http://www1.umn.edu/perio/tobacco/nicaddct.html http://www.nytimes.com/1987/03/29/magazine/nicotine-harder-to-kickthan-heroin.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm http://www.drugsense.org/tfy/addictvn.htm
2. Because it's an accepted social activity. 3. Because you get a psychological addiction AS WELL as the physical addiction. The psychological addiction to smoking is arguably 10x worse than the actual physical addiction.
Cocaine and heroin just have much worse withdrawal symptoms when addicted. But it's easier to get hooked on tobacco faster. Most people don't get addicted to heroin their first time trying it.. but many people get addicted to nicotine.
Source: Daily smoker for 17 years. Just quit smoking cigarettes ~2-3 months ago and have been vaping my ecig since then. Still getting nicotine but toning it down little by little.
I did quit cold turkey 2-3 times. Wasn't overly difficult, but I quit due to peer pressure and not because I wanted to. I ended up smoking again after a couple months each time.
You are over any physical addiction within a couple days to a couple weeks.... but the psychological addiction and "ritual" of wanting to smoke is much harder to break and can last for years. Shit, I've talked to people who quit smoking 20 years ago and they tell me they still sometimes crave that ritual

Yeah caffeine is very addictive too.. I used to work as a barista and I felt like a crack dealer at times, people would go nuts if they don't get their fix.
nicotine though is one of the most addictive substances I've ever run across. That and sugar.

Me and my friends would smoke joints with plenty of weed and tobacco alike day after day. Then you'd maybe go on holiday or something comes up and not smoke anything for a week. I'd feel no withdrawal symptoms from any. I presume to start getting physically addicted you have to first want to be, and to want to be addicted to cigarettes is extremely stupid in my opinion. I also had a friend who wanted to learn how to roll zoots so he would buy bags of backy and practice with them. Then he would smoke the ones he rolled. It had the opposite to a 'cool' effect though because he would roll the worst roll-ups I'd ever seen and had one of those awkward draws noobies do where they have to really concentrate and tense up until exhalation.

Some times if I'm stressing out I'll go buy a pack of cigs....mostly because I can. Smoke one or two then not touch em for like 6 months and by then they're all dried out and unpleasant looking so I just throw the rest out.
Nicotine just makes me dizzy...probably just the action of doing something mind numbing/moving my hands around is actually what calms me down.

If their corporate cigs then their not harsh but distasteful. If their natty's their harsh but taste good. Cigarettes are the lowest quality tobacco so I don't know why they're the most popular.

For many smokers, it isnt the nicotine addiction, they are addicted to the habitual part just as much.

And MAO inhibitors.
Working with mainstream smoke collected from commercial cigarettes we confirmed that cigarette smoke is a potent inhibitor of human MAO-A and -B isozymes.
Tomas Herraiz, Carolina Chaparro, Human monoamine oxidase is inhibited by tobacco smoke: β-carboline alkaloids act as potent and reversible inhibitors, Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, Volume 326, Issue 2, 14 January 2005, Pages 378-386, ISSN 0006-291X, 10.1016/j.bbrc.2004.11.033. (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006291X04025999)
The correlation between the levels of the βCs norharman (inhibitor of MAO B) and harman (inhibitor of MAO A) in tobacco smoke and the proportion of the inhibited isoenzymes in the human brain measured by PET strongly support the notion that these two βCs are responsible for the inhibition of MAO A and B in human brain from smokers.
Hans Rommelspacher. Isoquinolines And Beta-Carbolines As Neurotoxins And Neuroprotectants. Current Topics in Neurotoxicity Volume 1, 2012, pp 115-124
Platelet MAO-B activity, plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol, plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine concentrations were significantly lower in smokers than in nonsmokers, whereas plasma norepinephrine did not differ.
Ivan Berlin, Sophie Said, Odile Spreux-Varoquaux, Robert Olivares, Jean-Marie Launay, Alain J. Puech. Monoamine oxidase A and B activities in heavy smokers. Biological Psychiatry. Volume 38, Issue 11 , Pages 756-761, 1 December 1995
Inhibitory activity towards monoamine oxidase has been found in a solution of cigarette smoke. The inhibition was irreversible [in the context of a two-week time period. Look up reversible and irreversible MAOIs for more info on this]. When tissue slices of rat lung were incubated in the cigarette smoke solution or alternatively, exposed directly to cigarette smoke, monoamine oxidase activities were reduced drastically. Similarly, human saliva after cigarette smoking also exhibits considerable MAO inhibitory activity.
Yu PH, Boulton AA. Irreversible inhibition of monoamine oxidase by some components of cigarette smoke. Life Sci. 1987 Aug 10;41(6):675-82.

Does accessibility play a factor in addiction? Tobacco must be harder to quit because it is so socially accepted and common compared to even marijuana let alone cocaine and H. I've always thought this about alcohol as well. Accessibility plays a big factor in relapses..

Yeah, drinking and smoking being socially acceptable (although I suppose tobacco less and less with each passing year) makes it much harder to quit. If I go to a bar with my friends and I'm trying to quit smoking it's hard because everyone steps out for a smoke, or we sit outside and everyone is smoking. People don't step outside and slam some H or bust out a line of coke (not that people don't do other drugs at bars, but it isn't nearly as pervasive). It's hard enough to quit something that is so addicting without having other people use it in your face. It takes incredible will power quit smoking while being around a bunch of smokers; even more so if you're drunk.

I think this pretty much covers it. It's not just about nicotine, smoking in itself is a powerful ritual. In fact, that's also part of the reason why so many people smoke so much. You can smoke tobacco anywhere, any time and it won't alter your state of mind. Maybe to calm your nerves before an exam or something. You can't do that with weed.

i smoke tobacco because i like niccotine, beta carbolines and carbonmonoxide.
they give a great buzz combined, plus it's fun to grow, and looks really nice.
i like smoke. tobacco is more prevalent, and legal than weed, and i cant smoke weed because of tests....
i like the taste and smell. plenty of reasons. but eventuially i will be extracting my own niccotine and making my own electronic cigarettes.
i dont intend to smoke forever, unlike some folks.

Yes, I like the smell. Not all tobacco, but cigarettes for the most part yes.
However, I do not smoke tobacco, I used to when I was in early high school but only during weed smoking sessions, and the blunt wraps I used to use were made out of tobacco.
But yes I like the smell, I haven't smelt it in a long time but from what I remember I like it.

I've always been able to smoke for any period of time and then quit with ease, caffeine is infinitely more addictive than nicotine imo. I currently started buying cigs since I can't smoke weed because of impending probation and I just like the act of smoking something, but I regularly go days without them with no problem.

Heh, I was once like you. After I started buying packs I was done for. Not saying you will become addicted, but it's pretty easy to slip into.

I managed to never become addicted to caffeine despite drinking coffee regularly for a long period of time. It makes me feel great, but it also makes me feel like shit, so it's been pretty easy to stay away lately.

I got addicted to it hardcore when I was a barista.. I'd start off my day with five-shots of espresso over ice with a pump of vanilla, and that was just for starters.
Caffeine was way easier to quit though

I personally find caffeine is way harder to quit than meth. If caffeine is easier to quit than tobacco I should just stay the fuck away.

You think you won't get addicted and then suddenly your like fuck it Im just gona smoke a few more and then suddenly your addicted....
I always wondered why folks smoked as well. Almost all the people around me in my social circle smoke, it was inevitable that I started to smoke after hanging with them for a few years.
I smoke mainly because of the social aspect of smoking, along with the underlying mild stimulating buzz and some mild dopamine action going on. When ever I'm hanging with friends, I enjoy smoking a few cigarettes while socializing. It's the act of smoking that gets me, just having something to hold in the fingers, inhaling smoke is always a joy, it's an activity, something to do. The mild buzz is just a bonus.
After a good hearty meal, sometimes a cig sounds nice and adds a layer of satisfaction after eating.
Or sometimes after a long task/job of sorts, lighting one up is nice.
Only time I will smoke a considerable amount is if I'm on mdma, adderall, or coke....all of which is only a few times a year.
I don't find nicotine to be addictive what so ever!...I can have a pack of stoges sitting in my room for weeks with out smoking a single one, but then if I go to hang with friends or if I'm in a social setting, I'll smoke. Then the rest of the pack will sit until I'm once again in a setting that I like to smoke. Been this way for years. A habit in certain settings, sure, but I never get cravings or urges to smoke a cigarette when I'm just chillin.
Sure there is an aspect of physical/chemical dependency with most drugs when people let them selves get to that point....But I'm going to repeat what I always do, the addiction lays in the person, the person's lack of self control, and the person's relationship with said drug, not the drug itself .

I never really found it addictive I tried cigs once because I found a pack of them on the ground I smoked them all, and I had no desire to smoke any more or buy them. (I only smoked 1 a day)
I may get into cigars through (:

Neither did I. I only smoked for a year or so, in high school, and I'm not even sure why I quit, but it was cold turkey. My dad did it the same way. He says it also might've helped that his work place stopped giving cigarette breaks after a smoking ban, and that was it for him. Good thing they did that. I can't even imagine him smoking now.
Maybe I'm just not meant to be a smoker of anything. The smell really offends me for some reason.

zZZz said: likewise. it perplexes me why people would say tobacco is more addicting than other drugs.
The way it effects dopamine response. It makes the brain more sensitive to dopamine changes. Ive had minor withdrawals from opiates and they are much more intense than cigarettes, I felt like my body was going to explode from the inside. But I was able to push through it one shot regardless of my body feeling sick.
Cigs is different, I'm literally fighting my own conscience. It almost brainwashes you so you make excuses to smoke, maybe that happens with full opiate addiction as well but idk.
Bottom line is I don't really believe the withdrawal is as intense as heroin or cocaine but I do believe that breaking the mental link to your daily activities is worse than other drugs.

I read that tobacco is not physically addictive, only psychologically, like marijuana. I don't know if that's true, but I do know that nic addiction is mostly psychological.
Those that are psychologically addicted to marijuana like the altered perception. Those that are psychologically addictive to cigs are so by way of habits. Habits are more subconsciously driven than the will to alter perception. Therefore cigarettes (if one has developed many habits with them) are more "addictive".
IME.
