Choosing your life
    #19001421 - 10/19/13 08:32 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So when u are choosing what todo with your life, what thought processes happen?

I sit here and think I could go back and get an MBA, take some online accounting classes, write a book, brush up on math skills, learn a new language.  How do u decide what's next in your life?

If it's about making money then go with what you know.
If it's about being happy go with what you love.
If you've got neither then make something up.

Yeah! Those are great posts.  I get hung up on the thinking. Been thinking for two years :frown:. :feelsbad:

In high school, I was great at math.  I switched over to other sciences in college bc they were amazing things never offered to me in HS.  Then we had our child young, so I figured it was the adult thing to do to switch from sciences with afternoon labs to a business's degree. It was easy and I can get in and out.

Nowadays, I have custody of my kid and am kicking myself in the ass for not continuing math, switching from science to business, and never starting to try to write a book.  In HS, my prophecy everyone wrote about me was that I would be a prize winning artist.  So far on my journey of life, many people tell me "hey u should write a book" after they start talking to me.  Sounds exciting but not sure.

I'm definitely at that spot where eve69 pointed out.  Am I looking to make money? Do what makes me happy? Do I care? If I go for money, what point in life am I striving for?  Age 50? Do all that work just to retire where I am now? Who knows?
Lol smh....

For me it was a simple decision. I love welding, machining, electronics, and learning - so about 6 years ago I remembered I did a lot of this stuff in high school and liked it enough, so I went to trade school and got an AA and AWS/ASME 6G pipe certs, and got a high paying job out here in the oil fields. I love what I do and am sorta a workaholic, to a point. I do 60 hours a week but could easily still enjoy doing 70-80 hours a week since to me it's not really work, most of the time. My overhead is extremely low too, 250$ a month for rent, cheap phone bill, cars are owned, insurance/liability only (20$ a month) - food is the biggest expense as I don't like to eat crap.

From there I enjoy hobbies in my free time. I'm saving up $ to possibly return to school and maybe pursue some kind of law degree...or a materials science degree.

Anon1, have you seen the standard vid about this?

But you're by far not the only one with the problem, nowadays it's almost the norm to change not just jobs but careers as well, much more mobility, so times of uncertainty are almost a given.

Make lists, talk to people, talk to friends and people who know you, talk to people in different professions, google more about it, something's bound to jump out at ya.

That video seems like it's only half complete.  It's lacking something.  All the shit it said is exactly what I'm already telling myself.  Do what u love.  If u love it, it's not work. Etc etc

Doing things you love doesn't always pay well, if at all.

What I'm learning from that vidya, is to go make some money and do fun hobbies on the side.  I know it's contrary to what the video says, but that's what I gathered from it

I really like science and space, but I can't go back and start a degree from scratch.  I got a kid now, student loan debt for ages, life is already moving.  Maybe when I'm 40 I can get back into it lol

Never opt for a business degree when u love other things!!!

I spent 4 long misguided years studying economics and business and such crap. Then after 6-7 unsatisfying jobs I found out that whoa, I really really like art and colors and drawing and painting, and went to study art. Of course this was possible due to many facts, like being allowed to crash at my parents' while studying, not having kids to feed, etc.

I don't know what you're good at but certainly there must be a way to navigate your way into a job/profession where you actually feel like you're contributing, and it's a decent fit to you as a person.

Have you read / listened to Tim Ferriss' The 4 Hour Work Week? You should be aware that having a regular job is not the only way to earn bank in this century. Think outside the box, or you end up working for others who do. That's the game.
