Yeah, I was obsessed with herps as a kid.

I still catch snakes from time to time, though I must say I'm a good deal more hesitant to handle vipers than I was at 12-16.

I'd like to say I just didn't want to be a spelling nazi, but the truth is I never even noticed.

On the west coast we also call 'em racers...  My understanding is that they are usually associated with water - pick 'em up and they void nasty fish smellin' poo on ya.  Hold 'em clear of yer bod for the first minute or so or you'll get hit.

I have sometimes forgotten this knowledge, much to my chagrin.  It is foul!

There's a pic of one eating a slug in this thread.  Good little snakey!  I wonder if slugs are fishy?

"Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats."

"The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

And it is also hard to reflect tone through text. Someonme could be writing with a totally neutral tone but it could come off as sarcastic anyway

This is why latin names are better than common names.

Working in horticulture, people call many plants, all sorts of common names.
