Todays NC Report
    #19001825 - 10/19/13 10:13 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I am NOT 100% positive on my identification on some of these. Was late getting the ID process started including the spore printing. That being the sole reason for hindering production. So with that in mind, let us proceed...

Lepista_nuda

There was no evidence to support this at the time, but I am guessing L. nuda mycelium?

The closest thing I could find to this Bracket_Polypore  was Ischnoderma_benzoinum. But not close enough to settle for it.

Possibly Gymnopilus_luteus. Awaiting spore prints

OK so its not a fungus, but it still ranked as one of my "cooler" finds of the day. At least, I thought so...

Until Next Time...Enjoy!

Is it the different lighting? The Gyms totally look like two different mushrooms. The first two shots look like Armillaria and the next two look like H. fasciculare (apart from the lack of dark gills in the bigger one).

It's enough to throw a guy off

--------------------

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Buddy you aint tellin me nothin! The caps tend to vary greatly in shape and color tone at no given intervals during their maturity. The stems and the gill structure seem to remain stable and fairly consistent through it all. And between the in and out cloud cover and my cheap ass cameras inability to cope with change, keeping uniform photo quality was a bee yatch today. They are ALL spore printing, Every one. This is my first encounter with Gyms. I aint takin any chances of accidental Gallerina ingestion. There are plenty out there.

OH! Now I see what you are talking about in the photos. That one larger mushroom barely has any gills left due to parasites. Thats why it looks trainwreckish.

Totally a lesson in the shortfall of interpreting mushrooms from photos though.

Yes. Id'ing by photos alone is a game of Russian roulette among those looking for a free high. I have come to terms with the fact that I may never see an active growing  wild in this area. If I left out on a hunt with the mindset of finding actives, I would come home a pissed off MF EVERY TIME!
Check out these photos and see if they help put things into better perspective. Of course the prints will make the executive decision. G.  luteus could be completely wrong. That was the closest thing I could find to it. Here are some picks of the first flush in habitat. They are growing on exposed root system under a creek bank.

If you want to find them, one will be there eventually.

Even the dry Ponderosa in arizona has it's own Psilocybe.

The word is born!  Hypholoma sp it is. Where on the web would you all recommend for the best, most RELIABLE source for viewing photo comparisons? I have been using google images and it is terrible with consistency.I have been trying to compare Hypholoma with Gymns and as of now, I can not identify a single feature between the two that "sets them apart" from each other, other than a spore print. Apparently I am incorrect for assuming this due to the fact that you guys knew what it was hands down. I am in desperate need of a good photo reference site. I also utilize MO(too slow), Rodgers Mushrooms(not enough variety) and of course Shroomery.(Large ratio of poor quality photos)  Preesh8 it!
