colander size for grain preparation question PIC
    #18992521 - 10/17/13 07:24 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

hi guys

I wanna try my hand with grains for the first time. I'm planning to prepare 10 quart jars(about 10 cups of rye)what I currently have is a 10.5" diameter colander which I think is not gonna be enough to strain the grain after the soak. Should I get a larger colander to try to squeeze all the grain in one shot. I'm following RR grain preparation and he recommends strain the grain while boiling. I understand moisture content is important with this so that's why I'm asking for advice since I don't wanna mess it up

In the pic below is said colander with 2/3 of a rye cup  which I cooked today for a try run(with these  I'm gonna try to do a "grain LC" in 2 half pint jars)

still the main question is how to go about it with one smallish colander for a larger grain preparation, will one  be enough or should I get a bigger/2nd one? Any help would be appreciated

Half a cup of rye to 1 quart jar is pretty standard for non-master jars. To me it looks like you could fit 5 cups in that colander, even accounting for their expanded size. You can have a sizeable mound of grain above the rim of the colander without losing too much

I'm not doing g2g yet. I'm gonna be inoculating each jar with either lc mycelium or ms syringe. According to what I read when doing this jar should be 3/4 full and the equivalent would be 1 cup rye per jar...?

so 10 jars would take 10 cups of dry rye?

It would be wise to choose the ms route since the lc route is more likely to fail. As for the initial amount you use, worst case scenario you just have to throw away a few dollars worth of grain if you prepared too much. I think 2/3 of a cup per quart jar will be enough to make master jars.

haha dude there's no "master jars".I'm inoculating EACH jar with either ms or lc and then spawning to bulk(coir+verm) all 10 jars

RR say 1 cup rye per jar, so is gonna be 10 cups of rye. The thing is how to handle 10 cups of swollen rye with a 10.5" diameter colander

I was wrong about the half cup of rye per quart jar. I don't think it's all going to fit into that single colander.

Get larger colanders or more of them.  You want to be able to toss the grains so they'll steam dry.

Tthanks RR, I guess I'll get a larger 2nd colander to dump all the grain at once while oozing steam from the boiling, the way you recommend.

Go buy a mesh laundry bag or paint strainer that you can easily hang if doing large amounts at a time.
