SIDE PINNING IS ANNOYING (PICS)
    #19001288 - 10/19/13 08:06 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

i never quite understood why people specifically wanted to avoid side-pinning. i figured that the side of a bulk substrate is just more surface area for mushrooms to grow on. i have found that although this may be true, side-pinning is ultimately destructive to a grow.

normally, with my 56-72 quart monotub grows, i would use a black trash bag as a liner. because  i only had a half gallon of spawn left over, i used it to make a mini-tub with a 16 quart tub. instead of polyfil, i made it a sgfc hybrid. this is my second time using this tub, and this time, 2/3 of the mushrooms were the result of side-pinning and it absolutely destroyed the substrate taking these things out. not only did it destroy the substrate, but the mushrooms were covered in wet coir and it was disgusting.

here are pics:

the first flush was ~475 grams fresh.

figured i am not the only person who wanted to encourage side-pinning to my tubs and maybe someone wants to see what happens when you do that.

Really  man, you're gonna put a picture of your mail with a picture of your grow op?

I now know most of your last name, most of your address, and what Community College you attend.

Don't feel bad I had to learn this lesson the hard way too. I couldn't just take people's word. I had to see for myself  They are a pain in the ass! Even if it increased yeild a little bit, which I seriously doubt, it still wouldn't be worth it

I feel this is the best way to learn. If you don't trust advice act against it. Once you experience the consequences of the action you know come to understand why you were advised against doing so. Looks like you had a good yield either way, even if it meant tearing up the sub and having your fruits covered in coir ewwwww.

yes, the yield was decent, and i agree with having to learn that way. i should have mentioned that the last picture is of the first flush + a bunch from a 2nd flush of a monotub i just harvested.
