well i was going to but then RR said it doesn't seem anymore prone to contams so it really doesn't seem worth it. is pasteurized coir any better vs sterilized?

Ah man, it's late, but here we go...
Pasteurising kills most of the really nasty microbes in the substrate, while leaving many beneficial ones, that can help protect the colonising sub from contamination. From what I've read here, anyways.

If pasteurization kills trich and sterilization kills trich and bucket tek is in between I'm thinking it kills trich. From what I can tell your coir is just coir,so just pasteurize, sterilize, or bucket tek the shit and git er done. Coir is pretty forgiving, just get your field capacity right and it should do well.
I was talking to a guy in the hydroponics store I go to today about that shit and he said that they don't even carry the trich infused stuff cause its a lot more expensive than regular coir and no one wants it.

We pasteurize peat casing layers and manure/compost, etc., bulk substrates to preserve the beneficial microbes. Coir doesn't seem to have these so it doesn't matter. Furthermore, coir is very resistant to fungi spore germination unless it's riddled with plant roots, in which case the trichoderma serves as a beneficial.
I get coir and potting soil all the time with trich and various bacillus species for my other projects. It's no more expensive at all, and in fact much cheaper than the bricks at a pet store. RR

Maybe the guy I was talking to was out of it If the coir was infused with trich, would it not have to say on the package? Would that be considered a selling feature? Just curious because I used to buy all my bricks at the pet store, but recently started buying them from the hydro store as its cheaper there. Now I'm starting to question whether I should sterilize those blocks before I use em.

I think the bucket tek gets falsely blamed for a noobs contam issues when the culprit was contaminated spawn. I use the bucket tek for coir/verm/gypsum all the time with no issues at all

Well in one fell swoop RR pretty much solved that whole debate whether he knew it or not lol. Get ready to see that quote thrown all about for every possible reason.

I agree with that for sure. I have rarely seen the mean green doing the bucket. The only reason I started with proper pasteurization because at the time my main problem was verticilium and proper pasteurization seemed to make a difference (maybe it didn't could just be in my head). Then later I wanted to start projects with hpoo and kinda stopped looking at my buckets. Might go back to them tho just for the ease of use.
I just checked out the website for the brand of coir that I purchased. They do have a trich infused product, clearly states that it has trich in it, and is promoted as being more user friendly than their plain coir (which is what I got) so I guess I'm ok

With all the info out there saying a sterilized substrate is just as bad as an unsterilized one that isn't pasteurized, this thread will probably end up confusing new growers about coir.

Shit just confused me. I'm going to sterilized some coir then throw a handful of dirt from outside in it lol. Instant microbes..

That is not exactly true.
I had great success with that tek, until it failed massively.
I did a 40+ tub run with great results, then failed big time.
Check out the first link in my signature for proof....
My spawn was clean....
The truth is the bucket tek will work for most people a majority of the time, but it heats the substrate very unevenly, resulting in uneven temps throughout the process.
This leads to epic failure at unpredictable times....this is from experience.
