trich infected coir real?
    #19001169 - 10/19/13 07:42 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

It seems like coir infected with trich on purpose seems like a myth.

if trich spores are all around us then wouldn't it really not matter if it was infected with trich on purpose or not? and wouldn't proper pasteurization take care of that anyway?

if its not a myth and it does affect you then does this coir look safe to use because this is the one i bought.

No.  Everybody here is just making it up

If you want to know if it has trich in it, ask the supplier, or Google the brand.

well i saw about 50 people recommend 86 as optimal incubation temperature

also the main point was whether or not it really matters with proper pasteurization, and if infected coir really makes a difference because we are surrounded by the spores constantly.

Should it matter?  No.  In practice I wouldn't want anything I'm working with purposely infected with millions of mold spores, just so I can try and kill them.

Never used it, couldn't tell you.  Like I said, if you want to know, contact the supplier, or Google the brand.

I checked their website and they claim that their bricks are 100% coco coir with no pathogens, bacteria or fungi spores present. You're probably fine.

I thought the original question was whether or not it mattered. "Dead is dead" seems to be a well regarded quote here so ... wouldn't killing it negate the concern or is the concern legit? If the concern is legit then why?

Like I answered, should it matter? No.

That doesn't mean I'm purposefully taking the nastiest spawn and substrate before I sterilize/pasteurize and using it just because it should work.

If you get coir that has been inoculated with trichoderma, sterilize it to make sure.  Sterilized coir works as well as pasteurized and doesn't seem more prone to contamination.

Unless you get it from a hydro store, it's not likely to have microbials.

RR, then I pose the question to you, why does everyone bang on the bucket tek so much as most say it fails because if boiling water is used, the coir winds up partially sterilized?

alright sounds good, how would you recommend sterilizing coir just throwing it in the oven or is there a proper way?

ah ok well i plan on using it as a substrate for a monotub so would i mix it up and hydrate it with the verm and sterilize it or just sterilize the coir in a PC then mix it with the verm and pasteurize?

Mix it with the verm and hydrate to field capacity, then sterilize it all at once, in jars or bags.

Dude. Just pasteurise it like everyone else does, it's not hard.

Here's a good tek

Don't go looking for problems that probably aren't there.
