Sawdust alternatives

I called my local sawmil to ask for some sawdust, They said they treat there wood with anti mold paint before it comes to them. I said no thank you. I bought some wheat bran and that was the last of my moneys. Is there any sawdust alternatives for shiitake and oysters?
I have 2 hills of woodchips/grass hay. I'm thinking about making a substrate bags of woodchips and wheat bran. Will they grow?
If there is really no alternative, I have extra logs from shiitake log tek, I'm thinking about getting my saw and literally cutting my own or should I take the chips and break them down.

Can you get wood fuel pellets in your area? They work great and they're pretty cheap, like $4 for a 40lb bag.

Breaking down the chips with your chipper is a good alternative, as long as the species of wood you are using is shiitake compatible. No fruit or conifer woods.
I use an electric chain saw with canola oil for the bar to make sawdust for shiitake and oysters, using alder, maple and cottonwood.

I have a couple of cottonwood logs, The problem is that is an entire log. The woodchips I have is mixed with random chips, Thats why I'm afraid to use it.

nearby stores that sell pellets: Feed stores, hardware stores, etc. Home depot, lowes, ace, etc.
I used to not drive as well, but I still knew people that had cars, and once in a while I could con them into giving me a ride to the home depot and back

Most don't have that, but look on the bag. It'll say "100% wood" or 100% hardwood, etc.
I had to buy Bbq pellets last time because they were out of pellet stove pellets, but same difference. You're looking for hardwood pellets.

Thanks for replying... btw, Last question I promise...What was the price? Home depot does not list the price for some odd reason.

Meh, some times it's 5 bucks for a big bag, but I had to pay 10 for the Bbq pellets.

Man you wish to be now in Macedonia. Here sawdust is free as you wish. Sawmill here gives you at no charge just to get rid of it. They even call me to tell me when they have the oak when beech.. Come here be my guest. hehehe
