Make a microscope using your smartphone, and $10 of materials 2

Has anyone seen this before?
Apparently you take the focus lens out of a lazer pointer and use other materials to construct a homemade microscope. You place your phones camera right over the focus lens, in macro mode im guessing, and it works like a micoscope.
I might actually try building this in within the next week because if it works, that would be a sweet thing to have around the house. \

Wow! that's interesting, I'm sure many people will be using this for spores (; 175x magnification with a phone is unheard of

I was skeptical before I watched the vid, but that's actually quite cool. Might be worth a try, the price is in my range.

if you dont have a smart phone, would it be cheaper to just buy the microscope?, you could use a digital camera too right? youd just like have to hold the camera really still?

I'm guessing it would work with any type of camera as long as it has a macro mode (The better the macro mode the better the microscope? ) , but a smartphone seems like it would work better because you can lay it flat and have the camera pointing straight down. Using a regular camera, you might have to build an additional holder or something to properly level it. The better the macro mode the better the microscope?
Seriously considering building this within the next week or so when I get the time.

digital camera wouldn't work so well because of the size of the lens. Just save up for a phone for all the other benefits you could also get one of those USB attachment magnifiers which cost less

I went around looking for a cheap lazer pointer today but couldn't find one.
I have to run out later this evening so I'm going to check another store which I'm pretty sure has them.
I'm going to try to make a modified version first to see if it actually works, and if it does, I'll build what's in the video. I'm going to take the focus lens out of the lazer pointer and fasten it to a case for my smart phone. I'm going to see if I can fit the lens right in the spot where there's an opening for the camera on the case, so whenever I want to use it, I just pop the case on and I have a portable microscope. In theory it seems like it will work

If you want to see meristems you still need to get slides that are sliced thin enough, that's the only problem.

Thanks for the video. I was able to build one for $14.50 with the supplies coming from a dollar store (lazer pointer $1.50) and home depot. When the contraption was built, the specimen stage had to be ~1 inch below the the platform for the iPod to focus on the object. Furthermore, tried viewing blood smears, but that takes a magnification of around 300x to see. Kinda wondering if there is a way to increase magnification. For now the microscope is perfecto

That's amazing. Definitely going to build this now. I was looking for a lazer pointer yesterday but couldn't find one. Where did you acquire the plexiglass for the platforms? I'm not too sue on where to pick those up.

Yes, same thing. Lexan(polycarbonate) is similar and is more expensive, less transparent, and puncture resistant (used in bulletproof glass).

Ya I was wondering if the thing would work too while building it. If you're worried that it'll be a waste of time, you could pick up the lazer pointer and extract the magnification lens to test it out. The rest of the supplies for the microscope were found at home depot. The plexiglass was the bulk of the costs being $4.98 for an 8" x 10" sheet. Go for the thicker sheet to accommodate the weight of the phone as well as the thickness of the lens. Thanks for the video, I'm sure this microscope will come in handy for current and future biology classes
Edit: May wanna go for the finer closer threaded bolts for fine adjustment, because the focus range appears to be within < 0.5mm

It works guys.
I bought the lazer pointer tonight, got the lens out, and haggardly fastened it right over my phones camera. I might try to make a mobile version. I'm thinking if I buy a case for my phone and snap it on, there's a little hole in the case for the camera. I think the focus lens could fit right in there somehow so you could use it on the go, you'd just have to be super steady.
What an amazing contraption for less than 10 dollars

I kind of modified the design and put the focus lens into a structure that I can snap onto my phone, so the focus lens is positioned directly over my camera lens.
Now I have a portable version that I can take anywhere and use on the go. It works very well, except you need the right lighting. It's hard to see the subjects when there isn't a light coming from underneath to illuminate it.
