FoxDie's Fungal Finds!! (UPDATED 11/13)
    #19000396 - 10/19/13 04:13 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Seeing as though I'm always mushroom hunting (neighborhood, trails, forests) and always snapping pics (nearly daily), I figure I'll create my own thread.  I'll repost a few recent ones that I posted in other threads just to have my stuff together.

(all photos taken with my cell phone)

Today (10/19/2013)

Looked silly on this tree

Another angle

Amanita

Slimy ass bolete (birch?)

Hypholoma fascicular

Leccinum eh? Thanks!

Yeah, the mirabilis was insane. I felt like I found a holy grail. Its beauty was immense and it seemed so out of place amongst the green and brown forest floor.

I normally don't pick muscaria because I think they are just too beautiful but I wanted my roommate to see this.  She likes doing spore prints too.  It was picture perfect!

And here's some baby Cyanescens

Thanks Joust.  Yeah, it always amazes me how the "spikes" are so evenly distributed.  I'd expect the process of the cap opening to be more sloppy in regards to the remnants of the egg.

You would think so, but nature has a way of creating geometric shapes, its really interesting, and it doesn't surprise me that these mushrooms do the same, I think for one, they are small enough where a geometric pattern, or "even spacing" is achieved in appearance whilst still not being perfectly symmetrical in its geometry. - that sentence didn't make sense to me either...
I was looking at a A. muscaria pin yesterday for a long time, it was nicely even spaced because the cap was a perfect expanding ball, causing a geometric pattern.

But i always thought these were cool too.

Joust:  I love him but I worry so much when I have to move (in a few months).  Seattle's rental prices have sky-rocketed and with the increase in property values, it seems people are less likely to allow pets of any kind on the off-chance that they will "compromise" it's value.  Seattle is supposed to be so "liberal" and kind but in truth, it's a bunch of rich fucks buying up property and a bunch of poor kids like me just trying to enjoy the concerts and nature

Having said that... I'll never get rid of a pet because of a living situation.  He's my baby...

I just wouldn't let anyone have a large non-working animal anywhere on my property. Presumably I'd be rich so I'd be a rich fuck, but I think people are mistakenly presumptuous about their right to have stinking great dogs near me and my food, and cats in my garden. I don't care if they love them, they can try to work out where the thing diverged from any wild animal and take it there. Give me a minute and I'll try to engineer a lobby for increasingly tight licensing of any non-indigenous pets heavier than a baby rabbit.

And I'm nice to animals, good with dogs, but a pet-keeper-disapprover (not a hater).

but a keeper of domestic felines?  Check yerself.

Canines need to be confined to their own premises, particularly if they are damaging to wildlife or other domestic animals.  Beyond that, it's nunya.

If you're a cat keeper, unless you confine your animals indoors, which seems to me a horrible torture to the cat nature, your animals travel at will.  As a culture, we allow the domestic feline freedom to roam, mostly.

Interesting difference, but a pack of feral kitties has never taken down a toddler, either.

You're right, confining animals is cruel. Giving indiscriminate killers a global distribution, keeping them warm, feeding them and dealing with their mess, is stupid. All-in-all the argument for having a cat boils down to arrogant whimsy. Here and here, that kind of thing.

I think fry day may have inferred from this that you want the dogs kept away from your food and your cats. That wasn't how I read it first time but after fry day's comment I looked back and thought for a second you had cats. Obvs from that last comment I see you don't have much truck with them

Thank you Gerdo for showing me the error of my ways.  I did indeed misread that.  Sorry, Joie.  Of course you can oppose keeping pets if you don't.  ;-)

Bbbbuuuuuttt...  We have a long history with domestic felines and canines, and it seems to be for mutual benefit.

I swore off keeping animals other than domestic some years back.  Love reptiles, but came to understand that the relationship was NOT beneficial on both sides.

But I'll stop now.  Off topic and all.

What happened to my thread?! Hahahaha!

I love my dog and he loves me.  We're friends.  I got him from a shelter and never regret it.

Joie isn't wrong but time and human interference have run their course and domesticated pets exist.  My dog was domesticated before I got him.  I'm not catching wild Orcas here in Seattle and selling them into captivity.  It isn't a black & white issue but if a person wants it to be for themselves, that's their right.

Yeah that reminds me of the girl who wanted people to stop killing animals for meat, and to buy it at the supermarket where no animals are harmed.  And the lady who wanted the police to move the dear crossing sign they put on a road, because it makes deer jump out into traffic.  She wanted them to move it to a less busy street.

art2312:  Nope, he doesn't care for mushrooms.  He enjoys vegetables though, hahaha

Ganzig: I've never eaten any.  I even have them in my backyard!  Are they better to "harvest" at the state pictured or let the caps open wide and flatten out?  They get pretty big (4" across)

perkysmiles:  Apricot Jellys?  It's common name is "Orange Peel Fungus".  I don't know the scientific name.

My cell phone camera does pretty well as long as the subject is more than 2" away from the lens.  I have the HTC Droid DNA phone if you're curious.

Your tiny ones look like Xeromphalina campanella and your fuckers like Macrocystidia cucumis. The mushrooms in your first two shots don't look that much like Armillaria to me but if that's just me everyone do pile in and say.

Thanks Joie.  I don't know how many different Armellaria species there are but they definitely looked the part.  Especially the younger ones with unopened caps.  The stems had that fiberous, scaly thing going on that's pretty typical of Armellaria.  I'm not that familiar with the species though and could easily be wrong.

It's the ones in the foreground that look smooth and blotchy and seem to have a darker stem. The young ones don't look scaly either. I can be persuaded all the ones in the background do have rings and look more the part. It's the proximity of the clusters that makes me doubt myself.

Ha! Just saw the salmon got your dog. :cheer:

There were about 30 of these in the front lawn of a Wells Fargo.  Unlike many muscaria I found, these were true red ones and therefore HUGE!

I would have snapped more Amanita photos had I known you all would enjoy them!  I figured people are tired of seeing them by now, haha.

I snapped 2 more from the same spot.  I'll upload in a bit.  It's funny beceause the biggest ones were in the middle of the "lawn" and all the blowing leaves got caught up in them, like a trap.

Nice pics Fox_Die!!! I like the Armillaria by the creek shot! Very nice! Also ive been wondering if anyone has considered genetically cross altering Armillaria with Gymnopilus lmao? The we all could bnefit from seeing a billion of these every year! Im so tired of the many types of aborted and different colored huge caps of the honey mushroom. They are taking overM lets find somebody to cross the survival parts of Armillaria and the speed at which they multiply with Gymnopilus strains

One good way to collect weird looks is to go barefoot. I highly recommend it. Bonus: if you're female, this instantly stops catcalls/people telling you to smile/various other bullshit because every obnoxious comment gets converted into "Hey, what happened to your shoes?"

 That is GREAT! The other day I was at a local park in town (behind a nearby non-emergency hospital) on my knees bent over trying to get some good close ups of several mushroom species. Some lady drives up and says in a rather loud and alarmed voice "Do you need some help?" I'm like "Nah I'm good just getting some pics". "Yeah" she says "but are you okay? Do you need some help?" LMAO tooooo funny... I had to reassure her like 3 times I was fine and no I didn't need any help.

In Chico, I got thrown out of an office park by a rent-a-cop while looking for Morchella rufobrunnea.

To this day I bet he's trying to figure out what obviously criminal activity I was obviously lying about looking for mushrooms in a flimsy effort to deny.

TODAY...

Saw this massive muscaria pushing up a nice clump of bark...

Moved some bark to see the length of the stem.  The cap is the size of my fist and the stalk is already 4-5" tall.  This thing is gonna be HUGE!

Armillaria & Hypholoma on same stump, inches apart.

Armillaria.  Got a little lucky with the neat water-drop.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE THESE?!  They were growing in a park, on the mulchy/leafy ground.  They were about 5" long.  They looked so cool!

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Aw, man, you should have told her "Yeh, I COULD really use some help.  Stand right here and hold this reflector (umbrella, whatever).  Gee, thanks!  LOL

Asking nosy parkers to actually help you is the best way to lose them quick.

To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget.

Saw this little dude all by himself...

This bolete was WAY past it's prime.  Looks more like a sea anemone.

Anyone hunting woodchips has seen plenty of these.  They look cool when matured.  They get transparent.
