gymnopilus junonius?
    #19000049 - 10/19/13 02:43 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Habitat:
growing at the base of a stump in tennessee

it looks slightly lighter in the pictures due to the outside light.

The one on your hand might be a bit too big for G. junonius, and might be G. spectabilis.

The first pic has a white balance that is too warm and looks consistant with G. junonius.  And about 20 other Gymnopilus species.

The other pics have a white balance that is too cold.

I have never seen a Gymnopilus with intervenose gills before.

If the stem bases are enlarged consider Gymnopilus luteus.

I accidentally uploaded the first pic.  I'm about to edit it out.

I thought the gill thing was odd too but not all of them are like that.

Those are super cool.  You should dry some and save some for science.

Do they have a bitter taste?

Bright orange spore print, right?

I am not 100% convinced they are gyms, but they probably are.

They're drying right now for science.:mushroom2:

They're definitely bitter.

I'm taking a spore print right now but the spores dropped on mushroom cap on the fourth picture down

Here's the print.  I'm gonna assume they're spectabilus.

The really decurrent, intervenose gills and brown spore mass suggest a Phylloporus species. There are five taxa known from NA and I am only familiar with two. I have never heard of any annulate Phylloprus species.

I see a lot of brown, and precious little orange.

I adjusted the color balance for these at home and I really suspect Phylloporus. No idea though. Id love to see the microscopy!

Phylloporus would not have that veil...
also, in the second set on the smaller mushroom in the foreground, you can see what appears to be blue bruising...

When you take the cold out of the picture, it becomes obvious its a shadow

Interesting, the print could be darkish because of the condensation. I think the gills are just weird genetics.
I would say, G. spectabilis or something close.

Though i not sure of these thoughts at all, i could be completely wrong.

Oh. Well that rules out a super cool rare annulate Phylloporus. It pretty much has to be Gymnopilus.
