The joys of consumerism
    #18999956 - 10/19/13 02:24 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Lately I've been able to buy a lot of things and stuff that have been outside of my budget for a very long time and it has reminded me how exceptionally satisfying consumerism is. I really feel the dopamine kick in when I buy something new, especially if it means I get to sell or donate something that it has now replaced. If it's a piece to a larger project it's even better because you get the additional high of adding it to and seeing how it will work.

I think I got so used to not buying anything that wasn't a need that my brain became numb to those pathways, but when I broke that the other week it was like relapsing on a sweet, lifelong addiction. When I was a kid I got hooked on the smell of opening a new pack of cards or a toy, and now it's translated into the smell of new clothes and scotch but the feeling is exactly the same.

:feelsgoodman:

Do you be lovin consumerism like a good 'merican, or are you a hippie idealist type?

When you've been needing what you have bought for a long time, it is pretty pleasurable.

I get that euphoric feeling when I go to the restaurant or when I buy books. Video games used to do it for me, but not anymore.

Right now I would feel really good if I bought a glass shelf with doors. I have some scale models that have been sitting in the drawer for too long. I put a lot of time and effort in them, I'd like to get to show them off.

there aren't many things I want to own. I like to have a very lightweight life - if I lose my job, I can pack all my belongings in my car/truck, and move on. I just enjoy having a nice car/vehicle, good basics (phone, clothes, whatever), and a few creature comforts, but not much else.. I have plenty of money and nothing I really care to spend it on  the only major thing I want to invest in is more education for an even better job - I know I have much more potential to develop

I feel like all I buy are new pairs of shoes.
