It's too ridicolous... you pick something growing in nature that's not an endangered species and all of a sudden you're liable for prosecution.

PC Dave Tippetts from Wiltshire Police said: "Any person seen picking or found in possession of Magic Mushrooms will be liable for prosecution.
"One of my main concerns is that there are very similar mushrooms growing in the area that are extremely poisonous and could cause physical harm if consumed."
"...therefore we have to prosecute, for potential to accidentally harm oneself, a potential that doesn't exist in the confines of any legal activity such as walking the coastal path or leaving the bath running. We have thought this through very thoroughly and we have definitely identified the reason why we are stepping up patrols of mushroom pickers. No, we haven't found your bike yet. We're very busy. No, I couldn't name a poisonous mushroom. I'm just PC Dave Tippetts, and I sound full of shit, but I must be right, because I am PC Dave "Shit-For-Brains" Tippetts. If you met me you'd understand in a flash, because I don't look too clever either, and then I might have to arrest you because you might accidentally hurt yourself later, somehow."

Making something naturally occurring against the law... Doesn't sit right with me I'm afraid.

What are the penalties?
I imagine it would be mild since it has not been illegal all that long.

idk, class A is severe. It has always been illegal to prepare magic mushrooms, and to sell them. The law was changed because the police were scared that the wording of an informal letter to a shopkeeper would leave them struggling to prosecute shopkeepers, so they asked for a law criminalising mushroom pickers. Because, fucking idiots. And me, in principle at least, I like the police, I don't call them fucking idiots when they stop me for speeding or something, I call them fucking idiots when people like PC Dave Tippetts start trying to show everyone what a big willy they have. "Hey look, hippies! Let's arrest them and say it's for their own good!" or something, because this giant pussy of a police officer wouldn't know what to do with a real criminal. Dave Tippetts, fucking pussy.

Yeah clearly they don't realise that such articles promote the activity as much as prevent it. No wait. It does nothing to prevent it. And with pictures of other mushrooms they aren't doing themselves any favoures.

Nah makes no difference here. It was imedatly put in the same class as crack, heroin etc. How they came to that conclusion is beyond me. There is probably no recorded deaths as a direct result of it. Or an insignificant amount. By that logic alcohol should be class A++++++++ and yet that remains legal.

Going to prison for 7 years and having ruined life for a mushroom that is harmless to mentally sane person. "He is for murder, he's got 10 years, that one is for rape, 20 years. What about you mate? Umm I was hiking and picking mushrooms".
All this while violent people are getting wasted every weekend destroying, fighting and creating unneeded drama. And politicians say shrooms make people crazy, when they can look at their own backyard.

Federally it is Schedule one.
"Substances in this schedule have no currently accepted medical use in the United States, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse."
They don't all have to fit all criteria. Such as psilocybin is not addictive like heroin.
I am not sure about Oregon but I am pretty sure you will get in a lot of trouble.
Much more than possession of ganja. But I don't know for sure. Ill try to find out.

Here is a state by state list.
Pretty well organized but I cannot be sure about its accuracy.

They treat it as serious there, we are generally lucky that nobody bothers to disturb us here, notwithstanding PC Dave Tippetts, who after 7 years in the force has identified that his main task is ensuring you don't pick the wrong mushroom, by arresting you. Fortunately people who are looking for legal mushrooms never pick the wrong mushroom, so he can focus his efforts.
