Agaricus Californicus Question
    #18999244 - 10/19/13 11:09 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Does anyone know when Agaricus Californicus was first Identified and archived?
The approximate year of 'discovery' and/or locations of initial samplings?

Any information to point me in that direction would be awesome, thanks!

Is that the original name, or is that who found it?

I do not know if he found them.

I am rather sure that is the original name.

I would be suprised if he were the first to discover it, but he was likely the first to study, describe and classify it scientifically.

I don't know that he ever came Here, so I imagine he studied material and field notes of somebody who did.

by that, I clearly mean A. californicus, not Carl Linnaeus.

Sorry to confuse.

I thought you were being a smart ass with your first answer.

Linnaeus went to Hollywood all the time. He loved the Santa Monica Pier too.

Mycobank is a good place to look these up

Unfortunately, wikipedia.

So Linnaeus authored [revised] Agaricus in the modern sense, but not the species in quesion; correct?

Yea, I guess that is what it is, the author for the genus Agaricus.

That does fall into the European exploration period... about 100 years before California became a state...

Is this mushroom only known to be on the west coast of the US?

The whole reason I am even looking into this is because my BF raised a theory that these mushrooms were brought here possibly from South America or the Asian continent... but its a far fetched theory, however, I thought I would look into it... however, if the first documented observations date back to 1753 it is unlikely that it happened within the last few centuries, and will be next to impossible to trace that theory to see if its even viable....

Thanks for the help though!

Another sorce which will give you the citation is Species Fungorum. The Citation is the scentific paper that intally described it.

Not 1753, 1895. Byrain corrected me on that earlier in the thread.
