Canada just made a free trade agreement with the EU

Fuck yeah!
You might hate Harper, but he just pulled off the biggest thing since NAFTA. His political legacy if you want.
Free trade with Europe, 500 billion extra consumer to export and import from with better prices for everybody. Our dear conservative government decided to put all their eggs in the economic basket and it paid off big time.
The recent Throne Speech and this deal just solidified Harper's reputation and probably bought him another majority.
Here comes the money!

My post was facetious--I'm aware it involves more than cheese. I'm also aware that increased access to european cheese is one of the selling points behind this agreement
Do I really need to list all the shit harper has done, to convince you that multiple horrible decisions outweigh a single, arguably beneficial, trade agreement?
Remember the chinese free trade fiasco? The G20 billion dollar budget? The newly implement criminal code in an attempt to foster a homegrown private prison industry? The crippling of environmental law and policy in the quest to promote fossil fuel industry expansion? The muzzling of gov't researchers? Of the entire gov't? The not infrequent prorogues of parliament? The senate fiasco? The election fraud fiasco? The rule of party ideology over logic and reason, when dictating new policy? I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on--do you get the point yet?
Not to mention that this FTA has only be provisionally adopted, thus far, and likely won't see implementation until 2015--ideally, after canada has already given harper and his con(servative) men the boot.

Say goodbye to all your ma and pa stores and your G.D.P. Here comes wal mart.
NAFTA killed jobs and factories in America, nothing is quality made anymore its all cheap china goods that flood our country, most jobs consist of selling these goods.

He sacrificed a lot for the economy. Some of it sucks ass. But you can't have it all.
Overall, I'm satisfied. There's a lot of improvement to be made.
Prorogation: It is useful for MPs to listen to citizens and think of new ideas and time to write bills. It also prevents political gridlocks like the US just had for 3 weeks.
Senate fiasco: Harper proposed to suspend without pay all the senators involved in controversy (which goes against the law due to the fact none of the senators have been proven guilty of wrongdoing). Ironically, a liberal senator is trying to defend to conservative senators Harper just threw under the bus. He is also consulting the supreme court on how to reform the senate.
Environment: He fucked it up. But we can now sell more oil.
G20: Total fuck up, 1 billion in the garbage
Criminal code changes: 50% good, 50% bad. Mandatory minimums and longer sentences for minor crimes is not the way to go. Mandatory minimums and longer sentences for major crimes is the way to go.
Ideology: I agree, it's stupid, but you gotta do your party wants to do. That's why they were elected in the first place.
Economy: Free trade with several minor nations, Free trade with the biggest market on earth as of yesterday, Lower taxes, higher than expected growth, survived the biggest recession ever with a few bumps and bruises instead of amputation, best record of the G8, will soon implement a law that makes it impossible to have more than 25% dept per GDP ratio. Mortgage policy to prevent people buying houses they can't afford. I could go on and on and on...
That being said, I still don't know who I will vote for in the next election. I'm 33% for all 3 parties.

I think it's mandatory 6 months in jail if you're caught with 30 grams or a couple of plants.
Either way I'm not worried, My dealer got caught with 2 ounces and 1200$ in cash and he walked free the same day with his cash. The cops kept the weed. Not too bad if you ask me.

It's not a big deal, it's only 26 billion Euros per year.

From what I understand of this deal, it seems that all of the EU member nations have to sign on independantly before this can go into effect. This makes me highly doubtful about this deal ever going through. There are too many european countries opposed to canada's oil development, polar bear jails and baby seal clubbing.

Waiting for making a Free Trade Agreement across provinces. It was already easier to import/export wine to Europe in Ontario than drive wine between Quebec<->Ontario. There's a reason one doesn't see more Canadian liquor at LCBO and that issue is only going to get worse now. I guess some countries in europe can dole out more in lobby bribes than certain Canadian companies.

I'm not asking you to explain those other actions of harper and co., but I am interested in why you feel that a single free trade agreement will be enough to wipe the countries collective memory and guarantee harper another majority?
especially when considered, as I mentioned already, that this FTA is only provisional--it likely won't see ratification and implementation for a couple more years--how can a policy that won't be in place yet help harper win the next election?

i was never a fan of free trade, products are supposed to be taxed so you buy products from your own country, also the governments can use the tax money too

and honestly, they haven't even been that good on the economic front--despite what patlal seems to believe--remember their pledge to end the deficit by 2014? remember when they had to admit that this goal was no longer feasible (hint: it never was with their economic policies--but it shore made a good election talking point)

Might not be a majority, but Harper is still going to be PM. NDP isn't going anywhere and the liberal only have a sweet talker with no platform. Quebec will go NDP, the West will go conservative and Ontario will be split up.
It's going to be close.

@Shivas: Let me give you more details of how I see things.
5 battle grounds of Canada in order of size:
- Ontario - Quebec - Alb/Sask/Man - BC - North and maritime
ONTARIO:
Right now it's mostly conservative. But they like the Liberals and they are only going Conservative because the Libs don't have their shit together. I suspect that 2/5 will vote Cons, 2/5 will vote Libs, 1/5 NDP
QUEBEC:
The word Conservative is enough to justify murder. The word Liberal is associated with corruption. That leaves the NDP and it just so happens to be on the left just the way Quebecers like it. I suspect 3/5 will go NDP, 1/5 COnservative, 1/5 Liberal
ALB/SASK/MAN:
The conservative developped the oil sands in alberta and the EU free trade deal just boosted the beef, pork and farming markets which are concentrated in Sask and Man. The NDP has no influence there and the liberals have no plan and the people there aren't the type to be swayed by charisma alone. 4/5 Conservative, the rest will be split up.
BC:
Battleground. I can't say who will win there. It'll most likely split up 33% each.
NORTH AND MARITIME:
Harper has been developping the North and I figure the liberals might take the Maritimes. Maybe the NDP will get a few seats. Again 33% each
So basically, I believe it is just enough for the cons to get a majority or a strong minority.

While i agree that popular opinion doesn't really mean a whole lot when predicting election results (especially considering the fact that the conservatives won the last majority with the support of around 12% of eligable voters), I think the 2015 election is going to be a completely different animal than the last two.
The last election was a perfect storm for the liberals, with two successive leaders that the tories were able to cast in an extremely negative light, something that they haven't really been able to achieve with Trudeau.
They also had to contend with a very popular NDP leader in Layton, who drew massive support away from the liberals. He's no longer in the picture (rip Jack Layton), and Tom Mulcair..... well, that beard is just creepy.
All of the above combined with the fact that the Tories have been in power so long that some of the dirt is starting to stick to them. It should be an interesting election, for sure.
All I know is, if Harper gets another majority, I'm the fuck up outta here

Hey Patlal, have you been paying attention to Calgary's demographic shift? It's gotten much more liberal recently.

I'm voting for Trudeau in the next election. He seems like an intelligent, earnest individual with people's best interests at heart. That is the kind of Canada I want to live in, not the wannabe-US Canada of Harper.
Maybe Trudeau's stance is all a facade, but at least he's saying the things I want to hear. I am diametrically opposed to Harper's stances on virtually every human rights issue which is a far bigger deal to me than the economy.

Everybody always says that there will be a bigger turnout because of whatever reason. Its never the case. Even 2008 Obama didn't manage to get a 60% turnout.
Unless the new Hitler tries to get power somewhere I doubt anything will make people go out and vote.

Yep I'll probably vote Liberal next time too, for what will be the fist time ever. Liberal-NDP vote splitting has kept the Cons in power for too long. I would think there are others reaching that point. Merging the two parties would probably be their best collective bet at defeating the Conservatives, but neither party wants to make that compromise and the NDP has far less of a shot without Layton. Like Layton did, Trudeau has more charisma than Harper does which can't hurt his chances. Most other leaders of any of the national parties in the years since since Chretien have been pretty awkward and unlikable.

Vancouver and Victoria will definitely slide Liberal, greens may split them a tiny bit. I doubt NDP has much to offer now, they became the 'centrists' after becoming the official opposition. I'm sure their support in BC feels alienated.
The BC interior is an odd place though, not sure what will happen there. Though marijuana policies do matter a lot in that province.
Times are a changing on the Canadian West.

I actually think that Trudeau will bring a lot of NDP voter's back into the Liberal camp. From what I have seen so far it looks like the Liberals obviously realize they are losing to left-splits and are moving their policy a little bit left to bring over voters from the NDP.

A platform that includes marijuana legalization could earn them a significant number of voters who normally either vote NDP or don't vote at all. Anyone opposed to legalization is probably voting conservative regardless.

How can more trade be negative? It opens up Europe to both big and small business
- We can import goods, equipment, resources, etc from Europe with having tariff added to the final price.
- We can sell our goods, resource, equipment, etc to Europe without having the price inflated by their tariffs.
It increases competition and it opens up the market. Canada will get 500 million more people to export things to. We specialize in exportation. It's a very good thing

It's a very good thing
we were told the same shit regarding NAFTA
Yeah, well now that we've fucked you guys out, we're going after europe

I work with someone that I call Clinton (his name is Quinton), the reason for that is he's 25 and still a virgin, his 'girlfriend' lives in another state and he says she's still a virgin, she's a college student at the UofFla, I use that as an excuse to piss him off because he's so reactionary
Q: why do you keep calling me Clinton? P1: Because you did not have sex with that woman even though she's having sex with the whole campus
