Growkit: ready for harvest?
    #18998745 - 10/19/13 08:09 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys,

We're growing our own magic mushrooms for the first time and we had some questions.
1. Are our mushrooms ready for harvest or should we wait another day? (see pic)
2. Should we pick all the tiny mushrooms (smaller than 1 to 2 cm) along with the other ones or should we leave them in peace?
3. What should we do with the mushrooms that are growing on the bottom of the kit (see pic)?

Thanks in advance!

You can harvest the matured ones but leave the small developing ones. You can harvest the side grown mushroom as well but its not very easy. After you harvested all the mushrooms you can give a dunk to the substrate for a few hours then drain all the excess water and in a few days it will grow again.

You want to harvest the fruits as soon as the caps start to open and the veil starts to rip open.

The small ones (long as they're not aborts) should be left to grow more and open too.

if the little ones are aborts pick them when ever you pick ready ones

Do you know what the substrate consists of?
To re-hydrate a bulk substrate you only need to
dunk for about an hour, then pour off excess water.

PF style cakes is the only substrate needed to be dunked
for multiple hours.

As for harvesting, looks like you've already got some good answers.
But I might add. To harvest use a sharp knife etc, cutting as close
to the base of the fruits add possible. Twist/pull method can actually
damage your substrate and could open a doorway for contaminates to
enter. Causing the substrate to contaminate long before becoming spent.

Leftover stumps from fruits are fine. And often times new new pins will
form on or around them in future flushes.

These tiny caps are indicative of a lack of fresh air.

You need to fan and mist more, but especially fan.  Make sure they are getting 12/12 daylight temperature light.

It looks like these 'growkits' don't have any plan for ventilation...?

Try leaving the lid cracked, or make holes in the sides of the container.

Your mushrooms will appreciate it and will be bigger with much nicer fruits.

:whathesaid:

The slender fruits are an obvious sign of stale or lack of fresh air,
the small caps also indicate insufficient lighting.
