Tablet + keyboard dock: great laptop replacement?

I'm considering getting either a Google Nexus 10, or a Samsung Note 1014 10.1:
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Google-Nexus-10%2cSamsung-GALAXY-Note-10.1-2014-Edition/phones/7551%2c8139
Or, if Google hurry their sweet asses up, I might be able to consider the next Google iteration of their 10" tablet (but since I want to buy now, it doesn't really factor).
I probably wouldn't have considered getting a tablet before Google's Nexus 10, due to insufficient power and options in them, but since the N10, I think tablets have more or less come into their own and can be put to all sorts of excellent use.
I know through experience that currently available software for Android is capable of achieving pretty much anything you dare want to, but I don't know if all these great utilities work as well on tablets as they do phones.
I'm particularly wanting to use the tablet as a vertical e-reader for pdfs and the like, and second most-importantly, for writing code on. Are there any good IDE's for Android? I would mostly writing in Java and C++, and probably Python.
The total package of items that would likely be accrued are a tablet, a keyboard dock, an ethernet adapter, and additional SD storage. I think it's unfortunate that neither the Nex10 nor Note2014 provide SIM card connectivity, and that would really be a huge boon for me.
What're your thoughts on forgoing a laptop in favor of recent tablets, and the usability of tablets for my stated purposes?

Is your code going to run on Android or another OS? Or will it be platform independent? I think that would be _the_ major factor to consider in your case.

i have a 10" asus tranny android tablet and i love it. comes with micro and normal sd slot, mini hdmi out, usb, 2 batteries, and easy as hell to root and rom. i wouldn't call it a complete lappy replacement yet, but that is really just for software reasons. it is just as capable as a laptop but much of the tablet software is still really just phone apps ported for bigger screens.

It could be a nice replacement, but you won't get the functionality you get with a Laptop.
Tablet OS are very good nowadays, but you won't get the same performance you would get with a laptop.
A downside to laptops is that it's basically limited to what you get when you buy it. You can upgrade the RAM and HDD, but that's about it.
But I'm also guessing your are considering this setup for portability, but depending on your budget you can get a laptop that suits all your needs, and more.
If you have a pretty good budget, I'd just recommend getting a tablet.
Tablets are good on the go, but don't come close to a laptop IMO. I'm learning python, and would much prefer a laptop to use with programming. You have more room for your windows, etc.
However tablets nowadays are coming with really good processors, high amounts of ram, and SSD storage so that's a fucking great bonus.
If you don't have the funds to get a laptop that would suit your needs, I'd say get the tablet.
But for functionality, and portability, upgradeable RAM and Storage laptops are the best. Tablets are nice, but IMO they are not really suitable for a laptop replacement.

What is some functionality that you think I might miss?
It's for portability, education and productivity. Not so much for playing games - however, there are plenty of much less demanding games that will probably run entirely fluently on either Google's or Samgsung's newest 10" tabet.

the small keyboard is not the best for typing on, i often times pull mine off and use swype for larger stuff but would still prefer a normal sized keyboard but maybe i'm just a little too old for all this new fangled technology.

Smaller keyboard, doesn't natively support peripherals, to do that you would have to buy an adapter. Absolutely no upgradeability beyond a micro-SD card.
If it breaks, chances are it's broken for good and you'll have to buy a new one. With a laptop you have some opportunity to fix it.

Thanks. I think that the pros will greatly outweigh the cons, in my case. The Samsung Note 2014 10.1 also comes with stylus and has SIM card support (seems that lots of tablets don't), so I'm pretty sold on it now. The HDD thing could be annoying, but I think it will also keep me focused, as the only thing I'd need more space for is games, music, and videos.
